Sunflower: Symmetry, Cutouts & Value

For this project the MYP1 students used the sunflower as the muse for the project; inspiring students to go deep into its details and understand the impact that symmetry has on our perception of the world. Symmetry is used as a means to create a sense of order, stability, and equilibrium within an artwork. Here, the students used "bilateral symmetry," where the composition was divided into two nearly identical halves. On one side of the paper, students drew one half of a sunflower with a graphite pencil. On the opposing side of the paper, the student made the other half of the sunflower out of colorful paper; this created a contrasting yet complementary approach to the compositions.
