Mixed Media Project (Final)

For our final project, we will create a mixed-media drawing that combines collage + any drawing media of your choice.

Requirements:

• Must have a clearly defined foreground & background (you can do this by overlapping objects in your collage, using 1-point perspective, etc.)

• Must use 2+ types of media (i.e., collage cutouts, blind contour drawings, cut-up drawings (from previous sketchbook exercises) collaged onto the surface, drawing on the surface or on top of the collage, gluing 3-D objects, etc.)

• Must use a compositional structure (or combination of them). See the slides below for examples.

• Must have a concept or theme. You can choose one from the list or make up your own:

  • Psychological or Dream Landscape

  • Make a humanoid-animal-plant-creature (doing something or sitting for a portrait, etc.)

  • Visual puns

  • Social/Cultural Critique- it should be something you care about (i.e., global warming, pollution, toxic effects of social media, etc.)

  • Something else?

Materials

• Collage Board/Surface (size ~15''x20'')— examples: Crescent board, cardboard or piece of scrap wood, foam board, etc.

• Acrylic Matte Medium (8oz.); glue stick or Mod Podge OK

• Drawing Media

• Start collecting various found/collected materials for your collage— i.e., fabric/cloth, paper, string/twine/wire, old magazines, leaves/plants, unwanted books, magazines, newspaper, computer printouts, ribbons, buttons, sandpaper, nuts, bolts, other more three-dimensional materials, written text and poems, leftover materials other studio art projects, etc.

• Choose a compositional structure (or a combination of them) to use for your final project.

Sketchbook Exercise: Self Shape— due by 6pm, W (5/5)

Please complete the exercise in your sketchbook. Use your watercolor crayons/pencils.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Watch the video.

2. Make a line drawing of a shape (or shapes) that represents you.

3. Fill your shape/s with colors (lines, shapes, patterns, etc.); you're free to color outside of your shape, if you choose.
