1-5c: Still-Life Drawing: Organizational Line
Due by 6pm, M (3/29)
Warmup Exercise
Finished Drawing— Still life: Organizational Line
Pick 3-5 objects that you think are interesting. They should be varying sizes and shapes.
Setup your objects following the recommendations in the video. Try different arrangements, and experiment with your light source (lamps, flashlight, sunny window, etc.)
Take 3 different photos of your still-life arrangement.
Post 3 your photos to the WIP padlet by: 6pm, W (3/24); https://austincc.padlet.org/courtneycone/8fk7s7d70fz8efzd
Organizational line provides the framework for a drawing, similar to an armature upon which a sculptor molds clay or the scaffolding of a building. Similar to gestural lines, organizational lines are not confined to the outside limits of objects.
Organizational lines—
are grouped and stated multiple times.
are transparent and cut through forms.
relate background shapes to objects in the foreground and middle ground.
organize the composition
take measurement of height, width, and depth of objects, and the space the objects occupy.
Materials:
3-5 objects— you can use simple shaped-objects (like the video demo) or your still-life objects
Drawing paper (11"x14" or larger)
Vine or willow charcoal stick (or HB graphite pencil, eraser)
Sighting stick (or pencil)
Hard surface to support your drawing
If you're using loose paper, use clips or drafting/painter's tape to secure your paper to your drawing surface.
Instructions:
Watch the Organizational Line Demo (this is how you'll do the exercise)
Set up 3-5 objects, then repeat the exercise shown in the video.
Follow the steps listed below.
Use your sighting stick and organizational lines to draw the still life as accurately as you can.
When you finish, take a photo and post it to the Sketchbook Padlet: https://austincc.padlet.org/courtneycone/1575evt0udi7lykr
Organizational Line Drawing: Steps
Begin with horizontal and vertical lines— add diagonal lines last.
Allow lines to extend into negative spaces and penetrate through objects, establishing relationships.
Correct basic shapes.
Check proportions and relative heights and widths. Use the technique of sighting w/your pencil when necessary.
Darken some of the forms, establishing their exact shapes.
Materials:
3-5 still-life objects
Drawing/Mixed Media Paper (11"x14" or larger)
Vine or willow charcoal stick
Graphite pencils
Blending stumps and eraser
Sighting stick (or pencil)
viewfinder (optional)
Hard surface to support your drawing
If you're using loose paper, use clips or drafting/painter's tape to secure your paper to your drawing surface.
Expectations
Erasers may be used as a drawing implement ONLY (not for “correcting”)
The completed work should exemplify the method of organizational line.
The evidence of the measuring lines should be present.
The drawing should be refined with assertive lines (contour and organizational) describing the proportion of forms to each other and in the space.
Unity of the subject should be present through line
The drawing should have a balanced composition
There should be evidence of contour line weight to refine and create 3d forms.
The work should be well crafted.
When you finish, take a photo of your drawing
Post it to the Critique Padlet: https://austincc.padlet.org/courtneycone/bdo9922j07fqd7rq
