Materials:
1-2 sheets, 11" x 14" (or larger) paper
Graphite Pencils
Ink/Pens
Charcoal (pencil, compressed)
Erasers
Ruler
Optional: drafting/painter's tape
To start—
use a ruler to draw 9 squares (2.5"x2.5" or 3"x3"), evenly spaced with borders on all sides.
Note: for those who want an additional challenge-- draw 3D texture "cubes" (instead of squares).
Once the borders are drawn—
Make 9 distinctly different textures using varied combinations of the 3 elements that make up texture: line, shape and value.
Fill each swatch with the close up study of a texture
2 swatches in pencil, 2 swatches in ink/pen, 2 swatches in charcoal + 3 your choice
Write the texture you drew above each swatch.
Do—
Completely fill each square with close up texture.
Use varied marks, line, value and shape in each example--experiment!
Use different media: 2 swatches in pencil, 2 swatches in ink/pen, 2 swatches in charcoal + 3 your choice
Use distinctly different textures (not 6 different types of knitted sweaters/fabric).
Use a reference (from life or a photo)!
Don't—
Draw the object that the texture appears on in the box, just the texture close up.
Make rubbings of textured surfaces (hand drawn only)
Only use a single media for all of these
Examples of textures: wood, sponge, cereal, salt, concrete, hairbrush, hair, skin, woven, knitted, bath towel, paper towel, glass, metal, liquid, grass, leaves, bark, denim, stitching, basket ball, lemon/orange, lettuce, sandpaper, etc.
