WATCH: Realism Challenge #1 Crumpled Paper--- the music in this video is intense. You may want to lower the volume or mute it.
Read the instructions (below) and complete the exercise.
Materials
Lightly crumpled paper (3"-4")
Light source (lamp, flashlight, etc.)
Sketchbook
Graphite Pencils
Kneaded eraser
Blending stumps (cloth, q-tips ok)
Lightly crumple a 3" to 4" scrap piece of paper, and lay it on a new page of your sketchbook.
Repeat the exercise from the video: draw the crumpled paper in your sketchbook next to the actual crumpled paper.
You can tape the crumpled paper to hold it in place.
Try to draw an exact copy of the crumpled paper-- match the size, and capture the same values/shapes.
Take your time!
When you finish-- take 1 photo of your crumpled paper & your finished drawing (side by side)

WATCH: Tonal Charcoal Drawing of Drapery (you will recreate this setup at home for your cloth study).
Read the instructions (below) and complete the exercise.
Materials
Cloth/Fabric- white/light neutral color is best, but use whatever you have handy (towel, pillowcase/sheet, t-shirt, etc.)
You will need to to drape/hang your cloth over something or attach it to the wall.
Light source (lamp, flashlight, etc.)
Drawing paper (11x14" or larger)
Vine/willow charcoal, charcoal pencils/sticks
Kneaded eraser
Blending stumps (cloth, q-tips ok)
Create a charcoal drawing of a piece of cloth draped over something/hung on the wall.
Set up your cloth, light source, and drawing materials. You may want to cover the floor or workspace-- charcoal can be messy.
Set the cloth up somewhere where it will be untouched for ~1-1.5 hours while you work.
Rewatch the video, and follow along-- you can pause/rewind as many times as you need.
Capture the different values.
Include a bit of the surrounding environment (wall, floor, etc.) so your cloth doesn't look like a ghost.
Make sure to shade the different surfaces of the folds to create contrasts with the cloth.
Take your time!
When you finish-- take 2 photos: 1 of your cloth setup and 1 of your finished drawing
