New Student Checklist
Special Education, MA (ABA)
Welcome!
Watch the ABA New Student Orientation Video
To help orient you to the program and give you the information needed to successfully begin this program, watch the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Orientation Video, and then complete the New Student Checklist.
If you have questions after reviewing both resources, then attend the live virtual Question & Answer (Q & A) session hosted by your Academic Advising team. Details are below Step 5 of the checklist along with contact information for your advising team.
Step 1: Register for classes
This program provides students with a recommended course sequence based on when they were admitted. The course sequence shows students the recommended order of when to take their courses.
To find your recommended course sequence follow the steps below:
Visit the MA Special Education (Applied Behavior Analysis) program page and select the 'Course Sequences' header.
Select the drop down box for your "Start term" and "Year."
Click on the course sequence for the semester, session, and year you will begin the program. For example, if you were admitted for Spring 2024, session A, you would choose "MA ABA - Spring 2024 Session A (January)."
Register for your courses. If you have a hold on your account follow the directions indicated on MyASU priority tasks, or reach out to advising for assistance.
Registration dates and deadlines can be found on the ASU Academic Calendar. It is the student’s responsibility to abide by and be familiar with the calendar dates, deadlines, and policies stated there.
Summer 2024 - open
Fall 2024 - open
Spring 2025 - opens September 30th
Need instructions on how to register? Here is a step-by-step registration video tutorial.
Step 2: Pay for Classes
Once you are registered, sign in to the My ASU Finances tab to view and pay your tuition and fees. The ASU Tuition and Billing Calendar lists important payment deadlines. More information regarding how tuition and fees are calculated and important deadlines for paying tuition and fees is available via Student Business Services and the Registration and Tuition Payment Guide.
To act on a financial aid award, sign in to the My ASU Finances tab, and go to the "Financial Aid and Scholarships" section.
Important: Students must confirm participation in their courses by the 21st day of each session, or risk financial aid funds being returned to the Department of Education. Visit the 'Confirmation of Participation' webpage for more information.
If you plan to apply for financial aid it is important to familiarize yourself with the terms of accepting it. For any questions regarding financial aid contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Services department directly.

Click here for further information about ABA textbooks:
Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change - only one version is needed, the electronic (BryteWave) or the textbook (Sloan Publishing). This book is required for two foundational courses (SPE 526 and 527) and is supplemental in the third foundational course (SPE 525).
Relias license - since this resource will be utilized throughout the entire program, we recommend purchasing the 24 month license. Choose 'in-store pickup' to avoid a mailing fee. After purchasing, an access code is sent to your ASU email account from ASU Bookstore 1230txt@gmail.com with the subject 'Relias Credentials'. If you do not receive an email within 3 business days, please contact the bookstore team at 1230txt@gmail.com or 480.965.3191.
Pearson subscription (4-month term) - a digital version of the Applied Behavior Analysis book and other titles by Pearson may be available through a subscription (single or multi book access). More information can be found on the Pearson website.
Step 4: Plan of Study (iPOS)
The iPOS is the interactive plan of study for graduate students. It’s an agreement between the student, academic advising unit, and Graduate College that maps the requirements for degree completion. Students are required to complete their iPOS by the end of the first semester. You will gain access to the iPOS system once you are within 90 days of the program start.
For this program, an academic advising appointment is not required to complete the iPOS.
The iPOS will require you to complete the following 5 pages at a minimum, in the order listed:
Welcome page - Check the acknowledgment box stating you will abide by the graduate college policy manual.
Degree Requirements page - Use the Culminating Experience information to help decide if you would prefer to take the Capstone or the Applied Project as your final course. You will not be able to move on without choosing and can update later if you change your mind.
Course Admin page - Use your Course Sequence to determine which courses you will take/have taken, whether to put them to put in the ‘Required Core’, ‘Concentration’ ‘Elective’, or ‘Culminating Experience’ section of the Course Admin page, and which semesters to list them in.
Please reference the Elective Description List for more information about the elective course options listed on your course sequence.
Faculty Committee page - Please input Dr. Samuel DiGangi as the Faculty Committee and list him as ‘Chair’ once prompted.
Summary/Submit - Check the acknowledgment box stating you agree to act with academic honesty and integrity, and then submit your iPOS for review and approval.
We have provided guided instructions with screenshots below to help you complete the iPOS independently.
Step 5: Accessing your Classes & Resources
The digital learning platform for the program is Canvas which can be access through your My ASU page. The Canvas portal for the courses in this program will open 1-2 days before the course starts. Once it is open it will be underlined, and turn maroon in color when you move the cursor over it. Click on the course title to be redirected to the Canvas course page. Take time to familiarize yourself with the course structure, expectations, and assignments by reviewing the syllabus so you are prepared when the course begins.
Resources for Navigating Canvas and Slack:
Canvas: Your courses will be housed on the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), so take time to view the Canvas Course Tour Video (7 min.) and Canvas Student Guide.
Slack: You will collaborate with classmates and faculty through the Slack collaboration hub. More details are found on the 'Slack 101' overview.
