People and Society – Course Content
People and Society is a flexible course offering learners the opportunity to study themes, issues and topics of interest and relevance to them. It develops a range of skills as well as knowledge and understanding of people and society from across subject disciplines, drawing on the social studies, health and wellbeing, and religious and moral education curriculum areas. The subject includes a mix of all Social Subject content areas.
The course focuses on the areas below:
People and Society: Investigating Skills (National 3) In this Unit, learners will develop a limited range of routine investigating skills, including choosing sources of information for an investigation, collecting information from sources using a limited range of sources, and selecting information. Learners will develop these skills through choosing, with support, key ideas for study which will allow them to acquire basic knowledge and understanding of people and society.
People and Society: Comparing and Contrasting (National 3) In this Unit, learners will develop routine skills of using information to compare and contrast. Learners will develop these skills through choosing, with support, key ideas which will allow them to acquire basic knowledge and understanding of people and society.
People and Society: Making Decisions (National 3) In this Unit, learners will develop routine skills of using information to make decisions. Learners will develop these skills through choosing, with support, key ideas for study which will allow them to acquire basic knowledge and understanding of people and society.
Except in exceptional circumstances, we would recommend the National 4 People and Society course in S4 as a progression route for all pupils in this class.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S3 People & Society:
Third A: A pupil achieving this will be making excellent progress across all their assessments and class work. They will be consistently demonstrating that they understand and can recall the content of the course and are able to apply that understanding to class work and assessments. They will also have performed exceptionally well in a range of assessments including written tests, reports, and presentations.
Third B: A pupil achieving this will be making good progress across all their assessments and class work. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall much of the content of the course and are able to apply that understanding to class work and assessments. They will also have performed well in a range of assessments including written tests, reports, and presentations.
Third C: A pupil achieving this will be making reasonable progress across all their assessments and classwork. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall some of the content of the course and may be able to apply some of that understanding towards class work and assessments. They will also have performed reasonably well in a range of assessments including written tests, reports, and presentations.
Third D: A pupil achieving this will be making some progress across all their assessments and classwork. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall some of the content of the course but may find it challenging to apply this understanding to class work and assessments. They may also have difficulty in completing a range of assessments including written tests, reports, and presentations.
Second A to D: A pupil achieving this will be able to demonstrate that they understand and can recall small portions of the content of the course but will likely require tailored support to apply this to class work and assessments. Assessments will be tailored to meet individual needs.
