Updated May 2025 - new Effort and Behaviour ratings included
Throughout the S3 Elective PE course pupils will focus on some of the key content that underpins the National 4/ 5 course through a mix of practical and classroom based activities. This includes:
Looking at how the 4 factors (physical, mental, social and emotional) impact on performance
Completing a cycle of analysis for each activity which includes gathering data, identifying strengths/ areas for development and completing training programmes
Since the last tracking window pupils have completed the following activities:
Gymnastics
Pupils used their skills from the Sports Acro block and transferred this to gymnastics. As well as demonstrating flight, inversion, balance and rotation pupils looked at how to link these movements together to create routines on the floor and apparatus. Along with developing these key skills pupils have also looked at how the emotional factor (confidence and trust) impacts their performance.
Table Tennis
Pupils have developed key skills such as: serving, backhand and forehand. Along with developing these key skills pupils have also looked at keeping the score and running competitions.
Badminton
Pupils have developed key skills such as: serving, overhead clear and drop shot. Along with developing these key skills pupils have also looked at the 3 stages of learning and how decision making impacts their performance.
The majority of work covered in S3 Elective PE is based around CfE Level 4 Outcomes, ‘Cycle of Analysis’ and ‘Four Factors’. The majority of pupils at this stage of S3 are working at Fourth C or above. This does not mean that pupils performing below this level are not making progress - all pupils are making progress but some require more support with CfE Level 4 content than others.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S3 PE:
Fourth A: Making excellent progress at CfE Level 4, performing well against all the outcomes covered. Is able to demonstrate the key skills specific to each sport along with displaying knowledge of the ‘cycle of analysis’ and ‘four factors’ within each sport. When topics allow for extension, copes really well with the increased challenge.
Fourth B: Making good progress at CfE Level 4, performing well against most of the outcomes covered. Sometimes demonstrates the key skills specific to each sport along with displaying knowledge of the ‘cycle of analysis’ and ‘four factors’ within each sport. When topics allow for extension, copes well with the increased challenge.
Fourth C: Making reasonable progress at this level, performing well against many of the outcomes covered while finding others more challenging. Sometimes demonstrates the key skills specific to each sport and occasionally displays knowledge of the ‘cycle of analysis’ and ‘four factors’ within each sport.
Fourth D: Making some progress at this level, performing well against a few of the outcomes covered while finding the majority challenging. Often needs the key skills specific to each sport broken down and struggles to display knowledge of the ‘cycle of analysis’ and ‘four factors’ within each sport. Benefits from further consolidation of the level below.
Third A: While continuing to be exposed to CfE Level 4 content in class, finds the majority of the work very challenging and requires most tasks to be broken down into smaller, simplified versions in order to make progress and build confidence.
