WORK COVERED SO FAR:
Welcome to Business!
Pupils have been introduced to the subject of business by running a small café called “Café No 1”. All topics they have worked on and are working on are related to the common theme of creating and setting up their own café called Café No 1. The class work includes tasks on the computer and a quick quiz to check understanding of each topic.
Topics covered this past term:
STARTING A BUSINESS
This topic explored reasons why someone would start a business and how to set up a sole trader business. Pupils explored what they need to survive and an awareness of their wants before exploring the difference between goods and services.
ENTREPRENEURS
Pupils learned about the role of an entrepreneur and the qualities and skills an entrepreneur may use to develop their business.
BUSINESS LOCATION
Pupils learned about where businesses should locate and about the factors which businesses should consider before choosing a location.
BUSINESS PREMISES
Pupils learned about choosing a business premises and the factors a business may consider before selecting a commercial property through researching an estate agent website.
FINANCING A BUSINESS
Pupils learned about how a business can be financed and about what options a sole trader has to finance a business when starting one up.
BUSINESS ETHICS
Pupils learned about and explored how a business can be ethical and the role of the Fairtrade foundation and why businesses should support it.
MARKET RESEARCH
Pupils learned about what market research is, explored why a business carry out market research and different methods that can be used to collect the data.
FINDING A SUPPLIER
Pupils have learned about the varying factors that must be taken into consideration before selecting a suitable supplier for their café. Pupils were tasked with finding suitable suppliers of various products required in their business.
ADVERTISING
Pupils have learned the importance of advertising, the methods that can be used why advertising takes place. They have also learned the impact of advertising on a business, both positive and negative.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Pupils have learned the importance of customer service and the different ways it can be presented within an organisation. They have recognised the different ways this can be measured from the business and also appreciated the many ways a customer judges a business to identify their satisfaction.
OVERALL TEST
Pupils have had revision sessions on all 11 topics within the Café No 1 Business lessons and they have been tested to show their understanding – this test required demonstration of their knowledge and understanding to be shown in their answers.
The majority of pupils at this stage of S2 are working at Second Level B or above. All pupils are making progress, but some require more support with CfE Level 2 content than others.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S2 Business:
Second Level A: Making excellent progress at CfE Level 2, performing well against all the outcomes covered. The student can apply the key knowledge and skills of business management and exhibits good competency levels and confidence using ICT and understanding the fundamentals of the topic. Produces an excellent standard of work and when topics allow for extension into CfE Level 3 outcomes, the student copes very well with the increased challenge.
Second Level B: Making good progress at CfE Level 2, performing well against most of the outcomes covered. The student copes well with the application of knowledge and understanding of the topic and exhibits good competency and confidence in using their ICT skills. The student applies their knowledge and IT skills to enhance their work. Produces a good standard of work and when topics allow for extension into CfE Level 3 outcomes, the student copes well with the increased challenge.
Second Level C: Making reasonable progress at CfE Level 2, performing well against many of the outcomes covered while finding others more challenging. Sometimes needs the basic business fundamental concepts broken down into more manageable chunks and a little extra support to enable the student to gain more confidence to produce a higher standard of presentation.
Second Level D: Making some progress at this CfE Level 2, performing well against a few of the outcomes covered while finding the majority challenging. Often needs the business concepts to be broken down into more manageable chunks or further consolidation of the level. Often needs to revisit previously visited content to build more solid foundations and confidence before moving forward with developing their business acumen and IT skills further.
