French classes in S3 are split into sets to allow more tailored support and challenge for all pupils in their learning.
All pupils in S3 work towards CfE Level 4 outcomes with some pupils aiming to achieve their National 4 award in French over the course of the year and some pupils aiming to achieve the Modern Language for Life and Work award at Level 3 or 4. All of the courses allow for all pupils to continue to learn French in S4 and allow for progression to a further National Qualification.
Pupils have assessments at the end of each term that count towards their S3 Level 3 / 4 qualification.

Work covered in S3 French is based around CfE Level 4 outcomes. Most pupils at this stage of S3 are working at Fourth C or above. This does not mean that pupils performing below this level are not making progress - all pupils are making progress, but some require more support with CfE Level 4 content than others.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S3 Languages:
Fourth + D: Making outstanding progress with the Level 4 outcomes in all 4 skill areas. Confident grasp of new concepts and vocabulary. Accurate in written and spoken work and excellent understanding in reading and listening activities. When topics allow for extension into National 5 outcomes, copes very well with the increased challenge. National 5 French as either one of the main 6 subjects or as an extra 7th subject is strongly recommended.
Fourth A: Making excellent progress with the Level 4 outcomes in all 4 skill areas. Confident grasp of new concepts and vocabulary. Accurate in written and spoken work and excellent understanding in reading and listening activities. When topics allow for extension into National 5 outcomes, copes very well with the increased challenge. National 5 French as either one of the main 6 subjects or as an extra 7th subject is certainly recommended.
Fourth B: Making good progress with the Level 4 outcomes in all 4 skill areas or excellent progress in certain skill areas but not so confident with others. Good grasp of new concepts and vocabulary. Mostly accurate in written and spoken work and good understanding in reading and listening activities. When topics allow for extension into National 5 outcomes, copes well with the increased challenge. National 5 French as either one of the main 6 subjects or as an extra 7th subject is recommended.
Fourth C: Making reasonable progress with the Level 4 outcomes in all 4 skill areas or good progress in certain skill areas but not so confident with others. Good grasp of new concepts and vocabulary with practice, although may find some of the concepts challenging. Fairly accurate in written and spoken work and shows some understanding in reading and listening activities. When topics allow for extension into National 5 outcomes, finds the increased difficulty challenging but manageable with support. National 5 French as one of the main 6 subjects is recommended.
Fourth D: Some progress with the Level 4 outcomes in all 4 skill areas or more progress in certain skill areas but not so confident with others. Some grasp of new concepts and vocabulary, although may find a lot of this challenging, especially some of the grammatical concepts. Some accuracy in written and spoken work but mainly in simple, familiar phrases. Limited understanding in reading and listening activities, needs more support to understand texts. When topics allow for extension into National 5 outcomes, finds the increased challenge tricky. National 5 French as one of the main 6 subjects would be possible.
Third A-D: While still working on Level 4 work in class, extra support is usually provided to build confidence and skills. Grading of A-D reflects where a pupil sits within this group.
Level 3 C and above indicates that they have passed assessments at Level 3 and are therefore currently on track to achieve a Level 3 Modern Language for Life and Work Award. National 5 French as one of the main 6 subjects would be challenging but possible.
