Updated May 2025 - new Effort and Behaviour ratings included
The purpose of the February tracking report is to give a snapshot of pupil progress just before the course choice process begins so that pupils and parents are making informed choices on what is most suitable for progression into S4. Some subject areas, where appropriate, have given recommendations for course choices as part of their overview in the subjects section below.
The report shares information on your child's general attitude towards their learning through the Effort and Behaviour ratings, while also giving an overview on academic progress through the Working Level and Working Grade.
Effort and Behaviour ratings are linked to our school values of Respect, Wellbeing and Ambition on a sliding scale from 'Excellent' to 'Causing Concern'.
More detailed criteria is given here.
The working level is the CfE level that the learner is mainly performing within. In S3, the majority of pupils will be working at CfE Level , although there will be some young people who require further support with CfE Level 3. For each subject area below there should be a 'Journey to Senior Phase' graphic which shows the traditional journey through the levels that most learner will follow as they progress from S1 to S3. More info on this is given in the section below.
The working grade indicates how well the learner is performing within their current working level. More detailed, subject specific, descriptions of these are given for each subject area via the menu at the bottom of this page.
In certain circumstances, some subject reports may not contain a working level and will instead refer to a pupil making appropriate progress (AP). This measure is used to define the progress of a young person who requires a more tailored curriculum in that subject area: This student's performance may differ from that of their peers, as learning is pitched at a level that is accessible and appropriate in terms of pace and challenge; it aligns with what we would expect based on their personalised learning journey. Their report will still contain a grade from A to D, which reflects how well they are coping with the tailored work they have been given.
Each subject area also includes a ‘Journey to Senior Phase’ graphic, which outlines the projected pathway towards senior phase qualifications based on working levels/grades at each stage from S1 to S3. This information should support our pupils to make informed choices about the courses they wish to study when they are making course choices for S2 into S3 and S3 into S4.
An overview for all subjects is given here.
