S1 Design and Technology:
Having completed the Acrylic Ice Scraper Design & Make unit the S1 pupils moved on to their Practical Woodworking unit. Pupils completed practice woodwork joints where they learned measuring, marking out, cutting and shaping skills to produce lap and mortise & tenon joints.
They began manufacturing a hanging chalkboard frame made of softwood until mid-January. Since this time, and due to staffing changes within the department, the classes have temporarily been unable to access the workshop.
Pupils have continued their learning by completing graphic-related design tasks under the supervision of non-specialist staff. These tasks have allowed pupils to continue developing their creativity, presentation, and problem-solving skills in a design context.
Now that senior pupils are on study leave, S1 pupils have returned to the workshop for the final part of the academic year, where they will resume practical work and complete their hanging chalkboard frame project. This will involve using a range of hand and machine tools to produce stopped mortise & tenon joints, model assembly, and application of paint and varnish finishes.
The majority of work covered in S1 Technical Education is based around CfE Level 3 Outcomes and Benchmarks. The majority of pupils at this stage of S1 are working at Third C or above. This does not mean that pupils performing below this level are not making progress – all pupils are making progress, but some require more support with the content.
The following benchmarks were looked at when grading your child’s work depending on which units they have completed.
Design and Technology:
· Uses tools and equipment to manufacture models/products.
· Applies safe working practices when creating a model/product.
· Extracts dimensions from a drawing and transfer these onto materials to create a model/product.
· Identifies the different categories of materials.
· Recognises that materials have different properties and uses.
· Recognises that material properties have an impact upon manufacturing processing choices.
· Recognises that materials come in different forms.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S1 Technical Education:
Third A: A pupil achieving this level- will be making excellent progress at CfE Level 3, is achieving well against all the outcomes covered. They will be demonstrating these key skills in the projects that they have so far completed. There will be evidence that they have taken the project further than was required.
Third B: A pupil achieving this level- will be making good progress at CfE Level 3, is achieving well against most the outcomes covered. They will be demonstrating these key skills in the projects that they have so far completed.
Third C: A pupil achieving this level- will be making reasonable progress at CfE Level 3, is achieving well against some the outcomes covered while finding others challenging. They will be demonstrating these key skills in the projects that they have so far completed.
Third D: A pupil achieving this level- will be making some progress at CfE Level 3, is achieving against a few of the outcomes covered while finding others challenging. They will be demonstrating these key skills in the projects that they have so far completed.
Second A to D: A pupil achieving these levels- will be making some progress at CfE Level 2, is achieving against one or two of the outcomes covered while finding most challenging. They will be demonstrating these key skills in the projects that they have so far completed.
