S3 pupils have started working towards their National Qualifications in Maths, with a view to completing these in S4. In February, classes will be re-organised to ensure that pupils are following the National course most suited to their needs. This will be based largely on evidence gathered over the last two and a half years, and also on a December assessment, covering all BGE content, and additional level 4 assessments that have been taking place in class
Mr Hughes, Ms Tunstall and Ms Pollard's classes will be covering the National 5 Maths course, working at level 4+.
Mr Taylor's class will be covering the National 5 Applications of Maths course, also working at level 4+.
Ms Fish’s class have been covering the National 3 course, before moving on to National 4, and are working at level 3. The class are currently working through level 3 algebra topics, and extending into level 4 material.
Reports for Maths will include a Working Level and, within that, a Working Grade.
Mr Hughes, Ms Tunstall, Ms Pollard and Mr Taylor's classes are working at level 4+.
Ms Fish’s class are working at level 3.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S3 Maths:
A: A pupil achieving this will be making excellent progress across all their assessments. They will be consistently demonstrating that they understand and can recall the content of the course and are able to apply that understanding to class work and assessments. They can also apply the key knowledge and skills developed in unfamiliar settings when given problem solving activities.
B: A pupil achieving this will be making good progress across all their assessments. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall much of the content of the course and are able to apply that understanding to class work and assessments. They sometimes copes well with problem solving material that asks pupils to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar settings but at times finds this challenging.
C: A pupil achieving this will be making reasonable progress across all their assessments. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall some of the content of the course and may be able to apply some of that understanding towards class work and assessments. Sometimes they need concepts broken down into more manageable chunks and occasionally need to revisit previously visited content in order to build more solid foundations before moving forward.
D: A pupil achieving this will be making some progress across all their assessments. They will be demonstrating that they understand and can recall some of the content of the course but may find it challenging to apply this understanding to class work and assessments. They often need concepts broken down into more manageable chunks or further consolidation of the level below.
