Commentary
Stephen Foster composed "Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming" in 1855, a time of great sorrow, as his mother had just died.
The lyrics
do not tell us why a shoe merchant would give this card away as a reward to his customers 30 years later.
No doubt there is social commentary pairing this sketch with the caption. I'm just not sure what it is.
In any case,
the melody is beautiful
on its own.
