What is Career and Technical Education
Roseville Area High School students can learn industry-specific skills and, in some cases, may earn free college credit and industry-recognized credentials. Students are involved in engaging, hands-on classroom and field experiences, These courses develop essential skills and experience needed to either enter the workforce directly in a high-paying career or further their education at a two-year or four-year post-secondary institution.
CTE courses may have a course fee for project materials.

Description: This introductory class (formerly known as Intro to Media Arts) will explore all aspects of our Media Arts program here at RAHS. This is the base level course needed in order to take any advanced classes in the Communication technology pathway. We will explore a wide range of technology including screen printing (T-Shirts), digital printing, Intro to the Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator and InDesign, custom calendar making, beginning your digital portfolio and more! This is a very “hands on” class where you learn by doing. There is a course fee for materials needed to produce projects (these become the property of the student).

Description: Students will be introduced to professional cameras and photo editing software while learning fundamental skills in DSLR camera functions, exposure, and composition. The class will use Adobe Photoshop and teach skills in basic tool operations, photo colorization techniques, photo mergers, and photo restoration. Throughout the semester, Students will build a physical portfolio of their work, which will count as part of their final grade. Camera checkout is available on a limited basis. Access to a digital camera is recommended. There is a course fee for project materials and printed photographs that will become property of the student.

Description: This class is an introduction to Small Gas Engines. Students will learn how an engine functions and all of the components of an engine, then they will completely disassemble a basic small 4-stroke engine, reassemble, then start them up. Later in the trimester, students will have the opportunity to bring in an engine of their own and perform maintenance operations on it. An introduction to welding is also an aspect of this course. Students will learn about and perform the major welding processes. Students will come out of the class with lifelong skills they can use for future careers, education, and life.

Architectural Drafting and Design I uses Autodesk Revit, which is an amazing 3D software, to design and build structures from sheds to houses to stadiums! Use the computer lab to design every aspect of the architectural and building process including the foundation, walls, floors, ceiling, stairs and more. Students will start out by designing their DREAM apartment and then create a restaurant that caters to their favorite food. Students will learn all about the building process including building codes and nomenclature.

Description: This class is an in depth exploration of the engineering discipline of Mechanical Drafting. Students will use a 3D software called Onshape to model and design parts. Following creating parts in CAD, Students will learn how to use 3D printers to make these parts and eventually assemble them.

Description: Get involved in this school-wide annual publication and stay involved throughout your time at RAHS! Students can take this course multiple times. In this fun and challenging course, students are responsible for planning and creating the entire yearbook, from designing the cover to taking pictures at events to managing our finances and sales. If you are interested in photography, journalism, marketing, business, art, or layout and design, yearbook will help you develop your talents in an upbeat, team-oriented atmosphere. At the end of the year, you will have a tangible product to show for all your hard work and many memories and new skills to take with you in the future. Enrolled 10th - 12th grade students should check with their instructor about availability of concurrent enrollment credit through Saint Paul College.

Do not worry if you currently do not know much about cars, all you need to bring is a desire to learn and we will take it from there. If you plan to have a car someday, this is the perfect class to gain automotive knowledge that you can use for any car you ever own. This is a great class to take for everyone: from anyone who plans to own a car, wants to be a mechanic or even become an automotive engineer. Note: This class is designed for female students to get a chance to learn about cars in an exclusive, non-threating work environment. If not enough female students sign up for a whole class to run, then all female students will be grouped in the same class with male students. Description: This course will build on existing skills obtained in Small Engines 1. This advanced course will focus on the repair and maintenance of small gas engines. Students will test and diagnose, then fix engines that need repairs or maintenance. Students will have the opportunity to bring in a variety of gas engines of their own, these can include Powersports machines as well. Real customers will bring in machines for students to fix and work on as well. Welding is an aspect of this course as well as the previous, students will build on their welding knowledge and create a project using different welding processes. At the end of the trimester, students will participate in a fun and friendly repair competition to test their repair skills against their classmates.

Description: This introductory class allows you to find out more about the world of drones, Unmanned Aerial Systems and their related technologies, You will explore how drones are currently being used in a wide range of applications and what the future holds for this fast growing technology. You will learn basic flight operations and learn hands-on skills of how to fly drones safely and effectively. Description: This class is a combination of both drafting and engineering. Students will use a 3D software called Onshape to design mechanical parts in the classroom. Then draft and dimension different kinds of mechanical parts. Following creating parts in CAD Students will learn how to use 3D printers to make these parts. As part of the final, students will draft all parts and pieces of a toy they choose, then put the toy together in an assembly (IAM) file. Students will use wood and 3D printers to build and create these prototype toys in our new prototyping lab.

Description: Engineering is the main focus of this class. Students will work in small groups on a project they will design and produce. Students use the skills from Mechanical Drafting/Engineering I to draft the project then they will engineer and make it. In the past students have made hover crafts, motor bikes and more! Students will also use the 3D printers to make a product such as a cell phone case or key chain that will then be produced and sold.

Description: This class is for students who have already taken Drafting/Mechanical Engineering II. This class will be run consecutively to the Drafting/Mechanical Engineering II class with students in the Level III class being design team leaders. The focus of this course is creating leadership in the engineering field. Each Student in level III will be responsible for leading a design team. We will be working independently with team leaders to increase their leadership capability. We will discussing different theories of leadership and test these theories on a daily basis. These students will be working with everyone on the team and will be involved in every level of the design process.

Description: Civil Engineering is for students who have a curiosity and/or interest in Civil Engineering. The main areas of study will be surveying, roads, bridges, retaining walls and tunnels. We will be studying design, maintenance, and the construction parts of the projects. We will be exploring the different jobs and responsibilities of the different workers who are needed to complete these big jobs. We will also be designing a bridge using AutoCAD. We will be designing and building concrete benches. Finally we will be going outside and surveying a piece of high school property for a mock addition.

Description: Students will use computer-aided design (CAD) and computer numerical control (CNC) equipment to produce actual models of their 3D model designs. Students will create CNC-based projects to learn about and experience the design process, creative problem solving, aesthetics, mechanical drafting, time management, and certain intermediate mathematical principles.

Description: This course will begin to build a foundation for additional training opportunities in machining, manufacturing and welding disciplines. Instructional areas will include accuracy of print reading, use of precision measuring instruments, use of Computer Aided Design and Modeling, and benchwork applications and operations. We will learn these essential skills by creating hands on projects with 3D printers, welders, and computerized routing systems just to mention a few. Today's manufacturing offers many high paying jobs with many job opportunities for advancement. These technical skills are a necessity for any student who has a desire to enter many fabrication or manufacturing careers. These skills are required for a National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level 1 credential.

Description: Print Design III (formerly Production “Raider Grafix”) is a class where you learn how to run a real printing company. It’s like on the job training right here at school! You will learn all aspects of the business. You will work on real customer orders and do everything from working on art, printing the garments or other printed items they are purchasing from us. Students have an opportunity to earn money through our incentive system based on the orders you print! Production printing is a way for students to gain real world experience in running a business and furthering your skills to become college or job ready. There is no course fee for this class.

Description: Students will be introduced to professional cameras and photo editing software while learning fundamental skills in DSLR camera functions, exposure, and composition. The class will use Adobe Photoshop and teach skills in basic tool operations, photo colorization techniques, photo mergers, and photo restoration. Throughout the semester, Students will build a physical portfolio of their work, which will count as part of their final grade. Camera checkout is available on a limited basis. Description: The famous photographer Chase Jarvis once said “the best camera is the one that's with you,” and students will use their iPad or other mobile devices in this class since it's the most convenient camera to capture that perfect moment. Everything learned in the class about mobile photography will translate to professional photography. Students will learn about multiple forms of photography, (documentary, commercial, and fine art), as well as learn the fundamental skills of digital photography. These fundamental skills include lighting basics, composition, and editing. Throughout the semester, Students will build a digital portfolio of their work and reflect on their growth, which will count as part of their final grade.
