Is it too late to start a language?

It's never too late! French and Spanish are offered in all grades, so you may start or continue studying world languages at Roseville Area High School at any point. 

I completed Spanish 1 or French 1 in 8th grade - which course should I register for?

Students who have successfully completed level 1 in 8th grade should register for French 2 or Spanish 2.

French 1 A, B 

Course # 5311, 5312

Grade Offered: 9, 10, 11, 12

Credits: 2

Prerequisites: None

Description: French is spoken in over 30 countries and is a major language of diplomacy, business, fashion, art, cuisine, sports and travel. Through various activities and projects we will explore the French language and French speaking cultures around the world. You will develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing French in various situations such as introducing yourself, describing friends and family, talking about school, and ordering food and beverages.  Expand your career and travel opportunities by studying French!

French 2 A, B,

Description: In this course you will continue your study of the French language with emphasis on speaking and listening as well as building your reading and writing skills. Simulations of everyday situations will encourage you to communicate using vocabulary and grammar we learn in class. 

French 3 A, B

Description: In French III your speech will become more fluid as you continue to expand your vocabulary and knowledge of the French language. We will also use a variety of resources to explore the cultures of various French-speaking areas. The cultural emphasis is on the geography and the regions of France. We will learn about culture, food and customs through presentations and projects. Classroom discussions will further develop listening and speaking skills. More time than in previous levels is spent on reading and writing. We will read and discuss a story, completely in French, selected from a variety of French literature. 

French 4 A, B

Description: At this level of French there is more student-led discussion of current topics. Students will also spend more time learning about French literature, art and history. Texts, resources and activities from various sources are used to expand students' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. You will refine and add to previously learned grammar structure and learn more advanced concepts. We will compare and contrast differences in custom, culture and ideology between the U.S. and French-speaking nations. 

French 5 A, B

Description: Students continue to expand their understanding and knowledge of a variety of French-speaking cultures through history, literature, and art. As in French IV, a variety of texts, resources, and activities are designed to strengthen basic language skills and concepts.

Description: Expand your knowledge of the world! Many aspects of Latin American and Spanish cultures will be studied. You will learn basic skills to get along in everyday situations. Thematic units such as family, school, food, and hobbies will be covered. You will begin to learn how to read, write, speak and understand Spanish in the present tense.

Description: Strengthen and expand your Spanish skills through a variety of activities, materials, and approaches. Thematic units include technology, daily activities and travel. You will improve your skills in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Spanish.  Aspects of cultures of several Spanish speaking countries will be studied. Students use the past tense as well as continue the present tense.

Description: You will continue to expand your knowledge of the Spanish language. A variety of topics and activities will increase your proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Thematic units include the environment, healthy living, and social justice.  In addition to continued interactions in the present and past tenses, students will learn to tell others what to do as well as use the future and conditional tenses.

Description: Are you an upper level language student looking for a challenge? This course is for you! In Spanish 4, you will develop your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in the context of cultural themes related to the Spanish-speaking world. Come explore the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of the Hispanic world with us while strengthening your grammar and vocabulary. 

AP Spanish Language and Culture A, B, C*

Description:

Interested in earning AP credits while learning about Spanish and Hispanic cultures?
AP Spanish Language and Culture is the class for you! Come discover how culture and language relate to families, personal identity, art, science, technology, economics, politics, and the environment! You will practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening at an advanced level. This course is equivalent to a Spanish college course at the intermediate level - highly recommended for students continuing on to college.
