Education Career Pathway

The Education career pathway  includes courses to get you started toward your career as a teacher!  There are 3 concurrent enrollment courses- which means you earn college credits at Minneapolis College.  Peer mentoring and tutoring courses can help you learn how to work with students in an educational setting.

Intro to Urban Education

Prerequisites: None 

Description: Earn 3 college credits from Minneapolis Community and Technical College. This course gives prospective teachers and school professionals perspective on the rewards and challenges of teaching in diverse schools and communities. You will examine your own socializations, as well as examine and challenge personal and structural racism, sexism, and classism as it relates to the classroom. Course topics will include a historical survey of schooling in the United States, as well as rich discussions on education philosophies and current issues facing PreK-12 schools. You will be expected to critically observe and participate in K-12 schools and community life for at least 30 hours as a requirement for successfully completing the course. 

Intro to Urban Ed Online

The purpose of this course is to help future educators develop skills in the thoughtful integration of technology in order to support student learning. You will develop technology skills and explore many different tools for planning, instruction, communication and record keeping. You will develop an on-going professional development plan to continue to meet the dynamic nature of technology. You will be expected to engage in substantive discussions on the “digital divide” as well as ethical and legal issues around technology and information sharing. You will demonstrate your competence using technology by developing an electronic, standards-based portfolio.

Description: Earn 3 college credits from Minneapolis Community and Technical College. This course will aid you in developing a cohesive curriculum philosophy that reflects your beliefs and values and in assembling an extensive repertoire of instructional strategies, tools, and resources designed to foster increased student power, achievement, and equity in education for all students. You will examine research-based instructional strategies for successfully meeting the varying needs of students from ethnically, ability, culturally, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse groups. You will participate in nontraditional pedagogical models in order to evaluate differences in pedagogy and the effectiveness of successful cooperative learning. 

Peer Mentoring

Description: Do you have a gift of helping others? Would you like to know more about helping others who have disabilities? If you have these skills, or would like to improve on these skills then Peer Mentoring is the class for you! In Peer Mentoring you will assist in a Developmental Adapted Physical Education class or a Special Education classroom to help support and encourage students with special needs with their classroom tasks 5 days a week. Outside of class time you will participate in discussions, read articles, watch videos, listen to lectures, write reflections, and complete projects to help you better understand the basics of special education including information about various abilities, learning differences, instructional techniques, and adaptations. This is a great class to take if you are interested in pursuing a career working in education or with people of various ability levels. 

Advanced Peer Mentoring

Tutoring Students in Urban Contexts

Description: Interested in becoming an AVID trained tutor as a possible employment option for post-high school? Under the direction and supervision of an AVID elective teacher, students will learn how to facilitate student tutorial groups through a 10-step inquiry process. This course will include the 16 hours of mandatory tutor training and provide additional opportunities to practice hands-on tutoring skills within content classes throughout the district.
