Our mission in family consumer science is to prepare students for life: family life, life in college, independent living, and career life while educating them to identify and create alternative solutions to significant everyday challenges and to take responsibility of their actions in an ever-changing world. Family and Consumer Sciences is an academic discipline that focuses on science and the art of living and working well together. It combines characteristics of social and natural science, as well as the arts. Family and consumer science classes will explore cooking, hospitality, tourism, human and child development, textiles, housing and interior design. Classes are taught as electives and most are a one term class that will meet requirements for graduation. Our courses assist students in the transfer of reading, writing and math to real life. Our department offers a variety of courses that prepare scholars for the future. Family and Consumer Sciences is an academic discipline that combines characteristics of social and natural science, as well as the arts. Family and consumer sciences deal with the relationship between individuals, families, and communities. Our classes represent many disciplines including consumer science, nutrition, culinary arts, parenting, early childhood education, family economics and resource management, human development, financial independence, interior design, textiles, apparel design, and sewing as well as other related subjects. Classes are taught as electives, and some may count as an arts credit required for graduation. Our courses assist students in the transfer of reading, writing and math to real life. Description: Want to broaden your cooking and taste experience? You will learn and build on different cooking methods and techniques in this foods class. You will have the opportunity to have an hands on cooking experience in our new kitchens. Food labs include: yeast breads, fruits, vegetables, meats, pasta, soups and many more.  There is a $10.00 course fee. If you are on free and reduced lunch the fee is waived.



International Foods

Description: Build your knowledge of food preparation with this advanced course in foods. In this class, you will explore the food heritage of the world as you prepare new and exciting foods from selected regions around the world. In our commercial kitchen you will learn how to work with restaurant industry equipment. There is a $10.00 course fee. If you are on free and reduced lunch the fee is waived.

Nutritional Foods

Description: What to eat? It's a decision you make many times each day. If you enjoy working with food and learning how it affects your health, then you will enjoy this class. You will learn to select and prepare foods based on current nutritional guidelines. You will have the opportunity to have an hands on cooking experience in our new kitchens. Creative cooking labs will include: fruits, vegetables, breads, various protein foods, and healthy snacks. There is a $10.00 course fee. If you are on free and reduced lunch the fee is waived.

Senior Foods

Description: If you have never had a foods class, or have taken all four of our other offerings, this class is for you! This class is only offered to seniors. Senior Foods will focus on a variety of cooking techniques. Topics covered are food science, exploring small appliances, party planning, and cooking for one while on a budget for life after high school. There is a $10.00 course fee. If you are on free and reduced lunch the fee is waived.

Culinary Arts

Description: In our commercial kitchen you will learn how to work with restaurant industry equipment. Students will spend time in the kitchen building skills to cook restaurant quality meals, and learn how to keep guests coming back. Just as important, students become armed with the skills to find and keep a job, within the restaurant industry. Servsafe Food Handler Certification is available. There is a $10.00 course fee. If you are on free and reduced lunch the fee is waived.

Child Development: Prenatal - Infancy

Prerequisites: None

Description: Students will study development from conception through the first year of life, birth defects, adoptions, and cultural birthing. Students will have the option of taking home a "Real Care Baby" for the parenting unit. Topics will include contraceptives, teen pregnancy, prenatal nutrition and development, and healthy development for the first year of life.

Child Development: Toddler - School age

Description: Do you like working with children or want to have some of your own someday? If so, then this course will help you understand them better. You will examine the child from toddler, preschool, and school age. There are play days as well as visits to elementary schools in order to gain hands-on experience with school-age children. 

Teen Life and Mental Wellness

Description: Would you like a career in the social sciences like psychology or social work or just learn more about yourself? Topics of the course include Emotional Intelligence, Improving Mental Health, Practice Communication Skills, Exploring Personality & Values, Love & Relationships, and Current Teen Issues.

Family Studies

Description: Are you interested in learning about interactions among families or relationships in different cultures? Family Studies is designed to help promote healthy relationships and families in the present and future. Areas of study include: family types, the family life cycle, marriage customs, coping with grief/loss and dealing with crisis. If you are thinking about a career as a teacher, a social worker, a psychologist or working with people, then this class is for you.

Interior Design

Description: How will you decorate and design your first apartment, house or dorm room? Interior Design includes decorating a house with the use of the study of the elements and principles of floor plans, color, lighting, furniture arrangements and accessories. 

Fashion Merchandising and Design I

Description: If the world of fashion interests you, then this is the class to take. With a focus on both creativity and marketing, this course will allow you to explore design and possible career paths related to the fashion industry. Learn about designers, fashion history, design, color and personal fitting. 

Fashion Merchandising and Design II

Description: Have you ever wondered what New York City, "The Fashion capital of the United States" was like? We will explore global clothing attire, different clothing styles, and determine where fashion trends start. We will also study fashion capitals and explore different careers in the fashion industry. 

Creative Sewing I

Description: You will learn basic sewing skills that you can use throughout your lifetime - how to make your own clothes, mend clothes, and create new products to meet your individual needs. You will learn how to construct a project from beginning to end as you make a quillo (blanket), shorts, and a project of your choice. In this class, you will expand your technical reading skills along with your creativity. This class is designed especially for students who enjoy working with their hands. All projects will be made in class.  There will be a course fee for this class. If you are free and reduced lunch the fee will be waived.

Creative Sewing II

Description: If you have taken Creative Sewing I, or can demonstrate sufficient sewing skills, then Creative Sewing II is your next step. You will apply your advanced sewing skills through making clothing with zippers and buttons and constructing various other projects of your choice. All projects will be made in class.  There will be a course fee for this class. If you are free and reduced lunch the fee will be waived.

Living On Your Own

Description: Have you ever wondered how you will make it on your own? You will learn how to rent an apartment and decorate it on a budget, buy a car, make a major purchase and tracking your expenses to see where your money goes. We will also cover how to cope with consumer issues like checking and savings accounts, filling our tax forms, evaluating credit card options, finding affordable insurance quotes, and exploring career and post-secondary options. These are important life skills that everyone will use in the future.
