WHAT IS AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID is a global non-profit organization that works with schools and districts to provide direct support for students in grades K-16 who have the potential of becoming first-generation college students. In Roseville Area Schools, AVID supports students in grades 7-12 with a school-wide curriculum and rigorous expectations.

AVID 9 A, B, C

Grade Offered: 9

Credits: 3

Prerequisites: Students must apply and interview to join AVID. 

Description: Students will work on academic/personal goals, communication, and their involvement in their school and community. There is an emphasis on writing, focusing on personal goals and thesis writing. Students will work in collaborative settings to prepare for college entrance and placement exams, while refining study skills, test-taking, note-taking, and research techniques. College research will focus on financial topics and building knowledge around colleges and careers of interest. 

AVID 10 A, B, C

Grade Offered: 10

Credits: 3

Prerequisites: Students must apply and interview to join AVID. 

Description: As students increase their rigorous course load and school/community involvement, they will refine their time management and study skills accordingly. Students will expand their writing portfolio and their vocabulary use, continuing to prepare for college entrance exams and preparation. Lastly, students will narrow down their college and careers of interest, based on personal interests and goals 

AVID 11 A, B, C

Prerequisites: Students must apply and interview to join AVID. 

Description: The 11th grade AVID Elective course is the first part in a junior/senior seminar course that focuses on writing and critical thinking expected of first and second-year college students. In addition to the academic focus of the AVID seminar, juniors participate in college-bound activities and tasks to teach skills students will need as they apply to four-year universities and confirm their post secondary plans. 

AVID 12 A, B, C

Credits: 3

Prerequisites: Students must apply and interview to join AVID. 

Description: The AVID Elective 12th grade course is the second part in a seminar course that focuses on writing and critical thinking expected of first and second-year college students. In addition to the academic focus of the AVID senior seminar, there are college-bound activities and tasks that help students prepare for the academic, financial, and social challenges of post-secondary plans.
