January 2023

In 2023…

On a fairly regular basis, I try to start each calendar year with a speculative newsletter article. I started writing this “In ____...” column about 16 years ago at the request of a local newspaper where I was living and working at the time. It’s become a tradition for me to pause, think ahead, and write about about my hopes for the coming year.

By now you may be aware that the Alburnett School Board has approved my resignation, and that I will be leaving the district at the end of June. While my resignation is to pursue another opportunity, it puts me in a nostalgic mindset about the great Alburnett district as I think about writing an “In 2023…” article. So, I’m putting a spin on it today.

As I look into 2023, I look back and thank this school and community for the way you have helped me grow professionally and have been a blessing to my life. It's a forward and backward look because what you’ve brought to my life is what I carry with me as I prepare to leave.

First, you helped me raise my children and shape them to be young adults who understand the value of community and giving to their community. I know in my heart that you all know how that feels because most of you have or are raising your children here as well.

You gave me so many things to celebrate, like every little change in instructional practice that led to student success, or traveling to state level athletic competitions to cheer on our Pirates, or watching our facilities grow and change to match our evolving student opportunities.

And you pushed me to grow. I have a note on my computer that says, “Respond with curiosity. What do you think about this situation, and in what ways might you be wrong?” You offered me many opportunities to push back at my thinking, take in new ideas and perspectives, and move forward with a new and better idea.

Alburnett CSD community, I know you know this, but I want to say it anyway…you have the most talented staff you could ever ask for. Your administrative team is top notch, those who lead each department are fantastic at their work, and the entire staff understands the importance of constantly challenging the status quo. Your future together is so bright!
