Gatekeepers in arts organizations have an important role to play in determining which artistic works the public gets to experience. But who are they? Make you own list of gatekeepers on your own whiteboard before comparing with others....if you need some external confirmation, check here.
2. What control do gatekeepers really have over the art we consume and the knowledge we gain from it? What is the effect on diversity of knowledge?
Working in pairs, choose two of these articles to help you respond to the questions.
3. Should we separate ethical issues with the artist from the art they create? The following examples might help you build your opinion on this.
Separate the artist from the abuser
Love the art disgusted by the artist?
4. Traditionally, there were two opposing philosophical positions taken with respect to the legitimacy of the ethical evaluation of art: ‘moralism’ and ‘autonomism’, where moralism is the view that the aesthetic value of art should be determined by, or reduced to, its moral value, while autonomism holds that it is inappropriate to apply moral categories to art; they should be evaluated by ‘aesthetic’ standards alone.
Can you decide where you might be in relation to these two opposing perspectives?
