Starter: what makes a knife a knife?

Objective: explore indigenous knowledge and perspectives on that knowledge

Outcomes:

  2. What was the counter perspective? How did the inuit view the knowledge of the colonial explorers? This articl=e provides some insight 

3. What does indigenous knowledge look like? What knowledge from indigenous societies is present in modern industrialised societies? Have a think before watching this and making notes. 

4. Choose a particular indigenous society that interests you - it could be from the map (last class) or here Conduct some research to find some knowledge that seems to be unique and specifc to that society. E.g. knowledge of native species by Inuit.  

5. What can modern industrialised societies learn from indigenous societies? 

6. What is the difference between modern (western) knowledge and indigenous knowledge? Why might this difference in perspective matter?This is helpful to answer this. 

PLENARY: Go back to the map from the start of last lesson - compare the territories and the treaties layers… What do treaties (mutual recognition) suggest about ‘Western’ perspectives on indigeneous knowledge?
