This department is built on a vision that puts every student firmly at its centre. We believe that all students at Winton Community Academy have the potential to achieve excellence- in both their GCSE outcomes and their future endeavors- with the right guidance, support and challenge.
At its core, English is a subject that teaches students about the art of communication and the human condition; it also opens a plethora of opportunities post-education. We therefore aim to foster a love of English and learning in the broadest possible terms by employing a rigorous curriculum that actively engages pupils through a diverse body of literature, spoken language opportunities and writing for pleasure. The study of Literary Heritage builds cultural awareness, compassion and empathy.
In our lessons, we encourage students to think critically and creatively and have the confidence to share their ideas out loud; every student has something remarkable to offer. We want our students to feel safe in the knowledge that mistakes are a learning opportunity and effort will always be rewarded. We also know that reading can be remarkable and our students understand that they must read to succeed but also read for enjoyment.
