Our Dance Department is dedicated to providing a comprehensive, dynamic curriculum that nurtures creativity, technical skill, and artistic exploration in a wide range of dance styles. From contemporary and commercial dance to ballet, jazz, street, urban, and lindy hop, Dance at Winton encourages students to develop their technique, performance, and choreography skills with confidence and a feeling of self-expression.
Through the study of ballet, students engage with traditional French vocabulary and barre work, moving on to contemporary styles of dance through a timeline of key styles gives students an understanding of the historical context and musical influences behind each style. Additionally, our curriculum promotes the critical analysis of professional works by renowned choreographers like Matthew Bourne and Kate Prince, helping students explore the intent, purpose, and inspiration behind these pieces both practically and theoretically.
We aim to cultivate in students a deep appreciation for their own artistic efforts and those of their peers, promoting values of respect, empathy, and collaboration. Our ambitious curriculum challenges students to push their limits and be unusually brave, equipping them with the skills to create original work and engage thoughtfully with dance as a form of expression.
Students in KS3 have one lesson of dance per week and should they choose the course as an option have the opportunity to study this as a GCSE (AQA) or as part of the BTEC Technical Award in Performing Arts: Dance pathway.
Students across the school from all key stages are encouraged to join our extra-curricular drama and performing arts clubs where they can choose to be performers, playwrights, dancers, directors and even part of the technical theatre crew.
