Relationships, Sex and Health Education

Introduction

From 2020, the following subjects will become compulsory in applicable schools in England.

-relationship education in primary schools                                                         -relationship and sex education in secondary schools                                       -health education in state funded primary and secondary schools

These subjects will support all young people to be happy, healthy and safe. Equipping them for life as an adult in British society.

At the present time it is not compulsory for primary schools to teach sex education however for some time now we have run a successful growing up (Year 5), sex and relationships package (Year 6) for our pupils age 9-11 years. We have always consulted with parents on the content of this programme and it is well supported. We feel that this age range needs to understand how their bodies will change and prepare for adolescence and their feeling around these changes. We also want to avoid any mixed messages in regards to all types of loving relationships and reproduction. This age appropriate programme of activities  is taught to our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils in the Summer term and is supported by our School Nursing Team. The school consults parents annually during the Spring Term prior to the programme starting.
