At The Green Way Academy we teach phonics using the very popular Read Write Inc Programme. This systematic, synthetic phonics scheme teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. The programme includes reading books written using only the letters the children  have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). 

The children are assessed every six weeks and placed in groups which suit their exact phonic needs.  This means that every day, for one hour, they are taught by a well-trained adult, at their own ‘challenge point’. 

Any children from Y3 or Y4 who still need phonics teaching join their KS1 peers for phonic lessons.  In addition any child who needs additional support receives daily 1:1 Fast Track Tutoring from an expert adult to ensure that they make good progress and catch up rapidly.

The children take their Read Write Inc. reading books home everyday.  This allows them to practice what they have learnt in school and gives them an opportunity to show off to their family!
