Module 10: Engagement, Intrapersonal & Interpersonal Routines
This module assumes you know and can do the following: (click to open drop-down)
You know a process for accessing and analyzing data (see the Authentic Assessment and Feedback playlist for additional learning)
You have a basic understanding of virtual and blended learning models, frameworks, and components
You have a basic knowledge of UDL (see Module 7 and Module 8 for an overview)

Competency
Shift from teacher-led instruction to student-centered learning for the purposes of meeting individual needs and fostering engagement and motivation. (Aurora Institute)
Provide resources for students to learn content and enable them to work independently and/or in cooperative groups. (Aurora Institute)
Create pedagogical approaches and learning experiences that promote content-based problem solving and online collaboration. (Aurora Institute)
Learning Outcomes
Differentiate between planning for various modes of engagement, representation, and expression, with a focus on engagement.
Provide choice and autonomy in order to promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation.
Design for engagement in both synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences.
Design intra/interpersonal routines to foster behaviors for engagement.
What I will DO in this module:
Add ideas (for digital/analog teacher and learner strategies) on the Building Blocks of a Virtual Lesson.
Add to the series of learning experiences in your online platform (started in the previous module), including more than one way for students to engage with content and other students/adults (within or across learning platforms) in a unit or lesson.
Create claims and generalizations about effective engagement strategies in a variety of modes for equitable, engaging access to deep learning outcomes.
Get feedback from a peer using a protocol.
LEARNING PATHWAY
Start with the pre-assessment (below) to determine your path.
LAUNCH
COLLABORATE
If you completed Module 6, return to this flowchart resource: Think Abouts for Developing “Must Do” and “May Do” learning experiences (or click here if you did NOT complete Module 6!)
Locate the think-abouts that relate to representation and determine how you will answer these with a peer or your PLC/CTT
Look at the Find your Flow chart to see where we are at in the design process, then set a learning intention for yourself: What do you hope to gain as a result of engaging in the various learning experiences?
You are HERE in the module or playlist design process:
LEARN
LEARN ABOUT
Choose at least 2 of the following options to explore ideas to support engagement:
Explore these UDL-aligned strategies to see additional methods for engagement (recruiting interest, sustaining effort and persistence, and self-regulation)
Use this choice board to choose one of the six options to help you develop intrapersonal skills for productivity
Explore the 3 videos for engagement (these are in the GREEN section only; they range in minutes from 2:12-3:11 each)
MAY DO: Review these UDL Initial Steps for Diverse Learners
FIGURE OUT
Continue to add ideas to column 3 (Online/Analog Tools and Resources) on your Building Blocks of a Virtual Lesson; use the pre-populated exemplar on page one to spark your thinking
Consider ideas from Helping Students Hone Key Communication Skills to support interpersonal skill development (includes skill building activities and supportive technologies)
MAY DO: Return to Module 8 to review additional learning about virtual vs. analog and synchronous vs. asynchronous learning
Include more than one way to engage students in the asynchronous and synchronous learning experiences you are designing (within, across, or beyond learning platforms)
DO
Organize a series of learning experiences in the order that you think they will occur and label each with one of the Building Blocks and/or one of the verbs from the protocol in the Checkpoint below
Begin to populate those learning experiences with digital and analog tools for various modes of engagement
Build in adult-to-student interpersonal routines: Remember to leverage check-ins with students, either individually or in small groups to serve as a mentor as they make progress through modules on their playlist
The Mentor 10-minute Check-in Checklist is a sample protocol to guide quick check-ins to support learner agency and self-direction
REFLECT
TALK ABOUT
Describe your observations and connections with a peer or with your PLC/CTT: Which resources are new to you that are worth exploring more? What claims can you make based on what you know so far? What generalizations can you draw about engaging students?
Equity Focus: How are all students being served with these engagement strategies? Are clear, high expectations stated for all, using student-friendly language that guides the students to equitable outcomes?
MODULE RESOURCES
CHECKPOINT
Checkpoints include self-assessments, quick checks, peer feedback opportunities, etc. This is a way for you to determine if you are ready to move to the next module and/or if you would like to go deeper or return to previous modules for additional learning or practice
Quick Check Feedback
Find a peer to review the rough draft of your Building Blocks of a Virtual Lesson (consider peers within and beyond your discipline or grade level to get fresh eyes on what you've created so far)
Get feedback on your integration of engagement strategies from peers using this protocol
PLAYLIST SELF-ASSESSMENT
If this is your final module, complete this self-assessment based on the learning you've engaged in throughout the playlist; compare your responses to your (pre)self-assessment from the "Start Here" section of this playlist (your responses were sent to your email).
Celebration of Learning
Tweet one way multiple means of engagement within learning experiences will improve teaching and learning for all students to @MBAEA, @TheCenter_Iowa, #IAR2L and #IACompEd.
Consider sharing some of the best engagement strategies or protocols you discovered or are already using in your practice.
