There are 4 standards under the digital citizenship domain in the ISTE Student Standards. This module will focus upon understanding, respecting, and the sharing of intellectual property (2c)

The necessity to share content digitally has forced educators to use online resources now more than ever. Understanding the legal implications and having a framework to guide thinking for future decisions is essential.

Take this Self Assessment to determine your understanding and confidence with copyright compliance.

Read pages 1-6 of the AEA Iowa Copyright Briefnotes for Students and Teachers and watch this brief video.

Think about your current practice and reflect.

  • Am I legally and ethically using outside resources in my practice and with students?

  • Consider what it will take for you to deepen your understanding and apply it in your educational setting.

• Amount to be copied in relation to the whole

• Effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the work

  • Content uploaded on your learning management system (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.)

Make any needed changes to the content to ensure copyright compliance. If your discoveries impact others in your educational setting, share your learning and encourage them to make adjustments.
