Module 3: How Might the Universal Constructs Help Learners Be Future Ready?
This module assumes you know and can do the following: (click to open drop-down)
You can locate the Universal Constructs on the IDoE’s and/or The Center’s website. I can describe ways the Universal Constructs are connected to the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will be important for future graduates.

Competencies
Demonstrate a dedication to all learners reaching college, career and civic readiness. (KnowledgeWorks, Students at the Center, and CCSSO Educator Competencies)
Learning Outcomes
Describe each Universal Construct in three skills
Differentiate between 21st century skills standards and the UCs
Identify elements of the Universal Constructs in Iowa’s definition of College and Career Ready (CCR)
MAY DO: Make connections between the expectations for the use of the UCs in the UTT Guide and the expectations for the 21st century skills and the SEL competencies
What I will DO in this module:
Practice matching each Universal Construct with its three key skills.
Create a Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences among the various sets of 21st century skills in Iowa’s required sets of standards and competencies.
Make a list of what support will look like, sound like, and/or feel like for people who are implementing (or supporting the implementation of) the Universal Constructs with learners.
LEARNING PATHWAY
Start with the pre-assessment (below) to determine your path.
Use the Module Slide Deck in the Module Resources below to begin your learning pathway.
The learning tasks below are in a similar order to the order of the Module Slide Deck, and slide numbers are often referenced for your convenience.
LAUNCH
DO
Join this Quizlet class and then explore the 6 Universal Constructs and each of their 3 skills by studying these flashcards and playing the match game
Reference the Universal Constructs here as necessary (scroll down to the embedded PDFs)
Note your best time so you can compare after this module!
LEARN
LEARN ABOUT
Explore Iowa’s Universal Constructs and the 21st Century Skills standards here. See this slide for how to navigate to each set.
THINK ABOUT
Create a Venn Diagram to organize the similarities and differences between Iowa’s Universal Constructs (UCs) and 21st Century Skills Standards.
MAY DO:
Use this interactive tool to create your Venn Diagram
LEARN ABOUT
Explore Iowa’s definition for College and Career Readiness (CCR)
Which outcome areas align with the Universal Constructs?
Which of those do we currently teach, provide feedback on, and assess with regularity in our classrooms?
Add connections between the CCR outcomes areas and the UCs and 21st century skills on your Venn Diagram
LEARN ABOUT
MAY DO:
If your district utilizes the Universal Tier Tools building blocks, review Slides 10-14 to see where the Universal Constructs and SEL competencies are included in the guide
Add connections on your Venn Diagram
REFLECT
DO
Read Slide 16 to begin thinking about what the support for successful implementation of the UCs might look like, sound like, or feel like in your context
On Slide 17, choose Option 1 OR Option 2 based on your role in your context
Create a list of what support looks like to ensure there is instructional time and professional learning to support the integration of UCs OR
Connect the types of support that will be needed with other district initiatives (including the SAMI process and the UTT Guide)
THINK ABOUT
What connections can you make regarding the term “future ready” and the sets of knowledge, skills, and dispositions in this module?
What are some potential challenges or roadblocks you foresee after this initial learning?
What else would you need to know about the Universal Constructs and the competencies in order to implement them?

Use the Checkpoint to help you check your thinking and doing with the learning targets in this module, determine whether you are ready to move on to the next module, and select “must do” or “may do” content of this module that is needed for additional clarification and/or practice.
Describe each Universal Construct in three skills
Return to the 6 UCs and each of their 3 skills by reviewing these flashcards and playing the match game again to see how quickly you can match skills with constructs. Try to beat your time from the LAUNCH!
CELEBRATION OF LEARNING
Use the Celebration of Learning to synthesize key ideas gained, network with others inside and outside of your district, crowdsource knowledge and/or design ideas, and to extend your learning beyond this module.
