Module 1: Readiness Pre-Assessment

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

  • Learning Theory

  • Backward Design as a framework for designing instruction

Competency

Develop and deliver valid and reliable assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based criteria and assess learning progress by measuring student achievement of learning goals. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the purpose of readiness pre-assessment and its characteristics.

  2. Create a readiness pre-assessment.

  3. Interpret data to differentiate instruction.

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Describe what a readiness pre-assessment is and why it is important.

  2. Explain characteristics of high-quality readiness pre-assessments.

  1. Create a readiness pre-assessment for a unit of instruction using tools and resources provided.

  2. Learn how to interpret readiness pre-assessment data as a starting point to differentiate instruction.

Module 2: Formative Assessment

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

  • Use assessment in your current practice

Competency

Develop and deliver valid and reliable assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based criteria and assess learning progress by measuring student achievement of learning goals. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify components of formative assessment.

  2. Describe features of high-quality formative assessments.

  3. Create formative assessment.

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Describe formative assessment (what it is and what it is not).

  2. Explain features of high-quality formative assessment.

  3. Create a formative assessment relevant to your particular content/grade using the provided tool.

Module 3: Data Informed Differentiated Instruction

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

  • Use assessment in your current practice

  • Use formative assessment and use results to give feedback

Competency

Continually assess student progress against clearly defined standards, goals, and outcomes to identify specific topics in which each student needs additional support to achieve mastery of a concept or skill. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe data-informed differentiated instruction and why it is important.

  2. Differentiate the product for instructional units.

  3. Learn about cognitive complexity.

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Explain key elements of data-informed differentiated instruction.

  2. Differentiate instruction based on readiness pre-assessment and formative assessment data.

  3. Differentiate the product for instructional units.

Module 4: Summative Classroom Assessment

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

  • Differentiate between formative and summative assessments and the purposes of each.

  • Understand Bloom’s Taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge (DOK)

Competency

Develop and deliver valid and reliable assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based criteria and assess learning progress by measuring student achievement of learning goals. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe "Assessment as a Lever to Improve Teaching & Learning."

  2. Explore the "Framework for Designing High-Quality Performance Assessments: Evidence-Centered Design."

  3. Learn about "Features of High-Quality Performance Assessments."

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Explain why assessment is considered by some as a lever that can help improve instruction and student learning.

  2. Describe the evidence-centered design framework for designing high-quality performance assessments.

  3. Evaluate the quality of a performance assessment using the provided tool.

Module 5: Putting The Pieces Together

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

  • Differentiate between formative and summative assessments and the purposes of each.

  • Understand the various ways in which people learn.

Competency

Use data from multiple sources, including data systems, in a complementary way to inform and adjust individual student instruction and groupings. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the characteristics of a balanced assessment system.

  2. Describe the main purposes and uses of assessment information from the state, district, and classroom levels.

  3. Explain how to create classroom assessment maps and use the map to evaluate the quality of a classroom assessment system.

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Create a Classroom Assessment Map and set a goal for the year to improve the quality of your classroom assessment system.

Module 6: Assessment in a Hybrid or Remote Learning Environment

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

Under Construction

Module 7: Providing Feedback

This module assumes you know and can do the following:

Understand the purpose of providing feedback to students.

Competency

Develop and deliver valid and reliable assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based criteria and assess learning progress by measuring student achievement of learning goals. (Aurora Institute)

Learning Outcomes

  1. Utilize various types of feedback in alignment with intended student outcomes.

  2. Plan for and implement a variety of feedback tools in face-to-face, blended, and virtual learning environments.

  3. Recognize the importance of feedback loops to gather information from students.

What I will DO in this module:

  1. Practice identifying types of feedback based on given examples.

  2. Think about feedback provided to students and how that feedback might be given differently this school year.
