Module 3

Career Perspectives

"Career" is a big concept with multiple meanings, especially for each generation. In the past, this concept meant that people usually sought to have one employer or occupation for their entire working life.

In the 21st century, a career perspective concerns a pattern of "employment-related experiences." Your understanding of the concept of "career perspective" will affect how you view your own career, but economic realities could dictate that you will change occupations or employers at least once in your lifetime.

The Key to Perspective Taking

Make it Personal!

A personal career perspective comes in handy in many situations, including in setting goals and job searching.

You can conduct better searches for future job opportunities by examining your definition of good performance, or what's important to you in terms of succeeding at work.

No matter where you work, you want to be assigned to duties that you enjoy, and to give your best performance. Our ultimate goal is to love the work we are doing!

Recognize Differences!

Each generation, such as Baby Boomer, Generation X, Generation Y or Millennial, has its own beliefs about careers. Your perspective is shaped by the time in which you grew up and the career values that your family and society taught you.

As you begin to explore future career paths, recognize that people of other generations may not share your career perspective.

Seek a perspective

A career perspective may also be something that you want to find before you begin an education, training or work program to prepare for a new career. For example, you might want to volunteer in a veterinary office before deciding to attend veterinary school. Volunteering and internships can give you a career perspective that's hard to get from pamphlets or websites describing potential careers.

Understanding what you don't want, and finding out what you do...

Most people can list jobs they don't want. Finding the job you want often means learning about your personality and interests, and using this information to guide your career choice.

Personality tests and models can help you discover your best career fit. By matching your personality with a corresponding career, this can help you to narrow down the number of choices and help guide your future decisions about school and work.

ASSIGNMENT

For this assignment you will be taking three personality tests, available from the links here. At the end of each test you will receive a summary of your personal traits.

Your goal is to identify these traits, understand what that means in terms of your personality, those you work well with (or not so well), and make connections to future employment. Use the following document to help record your answers.
