Gr. 10 Term 2 Module 4

What am I going to do with my life?

In the coming years you will have a lot of decisions to make but for many, committing to a specific career path is scary. This is especially true when you have many interests but nothing concrete yet. Plus, there are jobs that you have no idea even exist, or haven't even been created yet!

In this module, you will be working through the free materials available from the UBC Career Counselling Department to help you narrow down your own choices.

A link to their website is included here, and is available to anyone even if you are not a current UBC student.

Self-assessment tools help us to gather new information that will guide our career-decision-making. Although they cannot predict your ideal career, they can be useful when you feel stuck or unsure about your career options.

Taking Inventory of Your Values

Again? Didn't I do something like this last year?

The answer to this is "probably," and probably the year before that as well. The fact is, we should be reflecting on our values and skills every year because they are constantly evolving.

This means that as you grow, your values and skills may/will also change and develop, and this will impact your career decisions and goals.

Identifying Your Values - Sample List

Step 1 - Your Values

Using the list on the left, you will complete the first assessment, available on the right.

Evaluating our Skills and Values

A Closer Look at Your Skills

Most organizations - large and small, public and private, local and global - are seeking employees who can demonstrate key professional (or transferable) skills and competencies.

General skills are valued because they help new employees to be successful in the workplace and contribute positively to the organization’s vision (Cregten, 2013; Rodney, 2011). These skills that you may have developed through part-time work, volunteering, or through class projects and assignments.

Step 2 - Your Skills

In this section, you will learn about some of the most sought after skills as highlighted in the document. Take a few minutes to do a quick inventory. Knowing what you’re good at and where you have room to grow will help you identify positions and work environments where you are likely to succeed and continue to develop your skills.

Career-Explorer Quiz

In this final activity, you will take the Career Explorer Quiz. Now that you have taken inventory of your values and skills, it is time to put it all together and see how they fit with potential careers.

Once you have completed your quiz, you will reflect on all three activities.
