Assignment 2
The Art of Networking
The Art of Networking
What is Networking?
The purpose of networking is to form relationships with those who'll help get you to where you want to go, and the earlier you start building up your network, the better. That's why it's important to start networking in college- before you're even ready to enter the workforce.
What's the difference between social networks and professional networks?
Instagram, Snapchat, etc. are examples of tools used to develop our social networks in an online format.
These are connections with people typically in your field and could be working professionals, experts, thought leaders, or even teachers/professors.
Networking with people you know, or can get to know, is an effective way to share information and get advice about employment. Networking is about building relationships and the strongest networks are built on friendships. This is why developing relationships at work can be beneficial in creating specific work networks.
Involvement in your community introduces you to a network of people with diverse backgrounds who have experience and knowledge about you. They may also know what you are capable of and what your strengths and various talents may be.
How do people get jobs? Did you know that networking plays an important role?
Rediscovering Personal Networking
Check out the following video about networking versus social media.
Creating Your Own Network
Here are a few key elements about networking:
Networks are based on the needs of the parties involved; be sure to provide assistance to the individuals in your network when you can.
When people work together, they form a relationship and a bond. This bond creates trust and a willingness to share information and support.
Remember that your personal integrity and your behaviour in social situations is reflected in what people think of you.
Share information and intentions so that the people in your network are kept up to date.
Keep in touch with the people in your network, even if you don't immediately require their help.
Remember to thank people for favours done.
Start to collect and maintain information about people who might know about jobs or who might act as a reference. Keep this list updated
You will need
the person's first and last name
a work related phone number
possibly an email address
You must always ask someone if they will be your reference - never assume that they will.
Think of someone who will say good things about you.
Depending on what you are applying for (e.g. school, work), you may want them to speak to specific skills or traits (e.g. reliable, team player, independent worker, etc.)
Help you reference by giving them the specific job application or your resume.
Assignment
The following is an illustration of relationship circles and how they interrelate with each other and the connections with you.
In this diagram you will need to strike a balance between quality and quantity. It’s all very well to have thousands of followers on your social media page but how many of these people can you truly rely on?
Every single circle is important and will have some meaningful connection to you. A very good start to relationship proactivity is to map all those who are present in your life.
