National 5 PE
Course Description
The National 5 PE course is made up of two components: practical and theory folio.
Practical (50%):
This component is assessed by taking part in two 'one-off' performances. These one-off performances are both marked out of 30. They must be carried out in a 'competitive environment'. As a result, it is imperative that your child is taking part in and is competent in two different sports as this will have an impact overall on their end of year grade.
Theory Portfolio (50%):
The second component is theory based and students are required to complete a 60 mark portfolio. The practical lessons will contain written content and this content helps students to answer the portfolio questions. A good level of English (reading and writing) will help students to structure answers in order to answer questions successfully. The portfolio is not an end of year exam and as a result students can work through it at their own pace.
Assessment
There is no end of year exam for this course. Both components will be assessed at various points in the year through the following activities:
Practical - One-off performances in two different sports (30 marks each).
Theory Portfolio - Written portfolio using content covered during practical lessons (60 marks).
Entry Requirements
There are no pre-requisites for this course however, students are expected to have some experience playing sports and are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular or community sports activities. Students should be aware that 50% of the course will involve a written element.
