Art/Fashion
NPA Art and Design SCQF level 5
Description
Drawing Skills covers areas such as drawing media, analytical drawing skills, and location drawing. Learning various drawing techniques including printmaking, painting, charcoal and many more.
Assessment
No end of year assessment. Course work is marked throughout the year. Requirements to pass the course is to gather enough evidence throughout the year.
Final Exam
There is no final exam for NPA pupils
National 4 Art and Design
Description
A broad practical experience of art and design and related critical activity. The Course allows learners to experiment with how they can visually represent their personal thoughts and ideas and create imaginative expressive and design work.
Assessment
The Course consists of 2 mandatory Units and the Added Value Unit:
Expressive Activity (National 4) 9 SCQF credit points
Design Activity (National 4) 9 SCQF credit
and evidence of written work through self-evaluation
Final Exam
There is no final exam for the National 4 Unit
National 5 Art and Design
Description
Pupils will develop creativity, perseverance, independence, and resilience and the course will provide a broad, investigative, and practical experience of art and design. Candidates will develop knowledge of art and design practice by studying artists and designers and their work. They also develop an understanding of expressive and design processes and accumulate and use a selection of related skills.
Entry Requirement
Completion of S3 Art and design related course or National 4 Art and Design.
Assessment
Component 2: Expressive portfolio
Component 3: Design portfolio
Portfolios will be completed within class and sent to SQA for external marking. These will contribute to your final mark.
Final Exam
Question paper 1 hour and 20 minutes exam.
National 4/5 Fashion and Textile Technology
Description:
This course provides an opportunity to learn how to operate a sewing machine by completing small exercises while considering health and safety factors. Pupils will learn about various construction and textile techniques.
They will also explore different investigative methods to help develop their design ideas and will be asked to evaluate their findings.
Pupils will learn how to create fashion illustrations and specification drawings.
Additionally, they will aim to develop their analytical skills by completing theory tasks.
N4/5 Unit 1- Fashion and Textile Technologies
N4/5 Unit 2- Fashion and Textile Development
N4/5 Unit 3- Fashion and Textile Choices
N5 Added Value Unit (35% practical, 35% written assignment, 30% written exam)
N4 Added Value Unit (50% practical, 50% written assignment)
Entry Requirement
You should be creative and enjoy practical assignments, while also being willing to study theory, including fabric attributes, techniques, trends, online shopping, and design planning.
Assessment
Pupils create a portfolio of evidence by completing SQA units. This portfolio is developed throughout the year.
N5 units and the Added Value Unit practical assignment are assessed by your class teacher, while the AVU written assignment is assessed by SQA.
N4 units and the Added Value Unit are assessed by your class teacher.
Final Exam
N5 Final exam is 30% of the course.
N4 No final exam.
Photography NPA Level 5
Description
Covering and developing your skills in taking photographs surrounding portraiture, landscape, and studio photography. This course will introduce pupils to the manual controls of a DSLR camera and give the experience of researching, making, and presenting their photographs. This course is SQA-certified and will allow you to proceed to the next level of qualification in photography, such as the Foundation Photography programme at college.
Entry Requirement
None
Assessment
No end of year assessment. Course work is marked throughout the year in units. Requirements to pass the course is enough evidence in both units (Landscapes and portraiture). Additional understanding of the terminology is required.
Final Exam
There is no final exam for NPA pupils.
Health
Practical Cookery National 4/National 5
Description:
This course provides learners with skills in preparing and using ingredients, storing ingredients, different methods of cooking and presenting their dishes. Learners will also develop knowledge in sustainability, the cost of preparing a meal and healthy eating guidelines. The SQA curriculum provides some choice in the dishes they cook.
Entry Requirement
Level 3 by the end of S3- National 4
Level 4 by the end of S3- National 5
Assessment
All pupils carry out 2 unit assessments before where they cook a double dish in 1hour 30 mins without the help of a teacher. National 5 recipes are more complex than National 4 recipes.
The National 5 course requires completed unit books and a time plan

Final Exam
There is no final exam for National 4 pupils.
National 5 pupils will sit 3 exams. Firstly, their assignment booklet where they complete a time-plan, service details and equipment lists in 1 hour 30mins. Secondly a 2.5-hour practical cookery exam where they prepare a started, main course and dessert to serve 4. Finally, there is a 1 hour written paper.
