Equality Alliance
LGBT+ at Hazlehead Academy
Hazlehead Academy believes that it is essential to create a welcoming and inclusive school ethos and environment for LGBT+ pupils, staff and families.
As part of this we are taking part in the LGBT Youth Scotland LGBT Schools Charter programme (Click here for further information) which has been developed to support schools to undertake training and review policies, practice and resources to make sure that we’re not only meeting legislative needs but are as inclusive as we can be. We aim to achieve Silver Chartership by the end of 2021.
Our Equality Alliance Group meets every Monday lunchtime in the library – everyone welcome.
We are proud to adopt the LGBT Charter.

Equality Alliance Activities
Hazlehead Academy runs activities throughout the year which support, promote and celebrate our LGBT community.
February was LGBT History Month which was celebrated throughout the school with displays, activities and events.
We held a Rainbow cupcake sale, showed film 'Love, Simon' over a week of lunchtimes, displayed our 'LGBT Icons' and all of our LGBT books in the library. Staff and pupils wore a rainbow ribbon or laces of support and we asked everyone in the school to sign our Rainbow Flag.
In November 2019 we held a Coffee Morning for Book Week Scotland. We chose 5 books and decorated areas in the library with that books' theme. We invited local primary schools to attend and groups visited each book 'corner', listened to the story and took part in some activities. Included in our books was 'And Tango Makes Three', a true story about a same-sex relationship between two penguins in Central Park Zoo, and 'Jump' which challenges gender stereotypes. It was a great morning with lots of fun had by all.
