We had a lovely gathering of the whole school in the central well yesterday, to:
Announce the winners of the whole school 'Chest' writing challenge.
To have Glee lift our spirits with some lovely festive singing
To announce which house has won the House Points Award for this term.
It was lovely to celebrate the amazing ASPIRATIONAL writing which had been produced by children of all ages throughout the school, and to be together as a school to celebrate the talents and hard work of our pupils. Those children in Seaton house let our a great cheer when they found out the writing challenge results had tipped the balance in their favour as they took the win for the term.
Wishing all families a relaxing festive break. We look forward to seeing you all back in January for a busy term!
Keep track of how many points each house has earned. Points are awarded based on the schools values ' Curious, aspiring, resilient minds and kind, respectful, inclusive hearts'.
We had great fun this week as the House Team Leaders put on their first 'Ethos Event' of the session - Bingo! It was great to have a new event which allowed for a bit of fun competative spirit. The cheers certainly grew and grew as 'House' was called repeatedly and eventually 'BINGO!'. We saw each house earn a huge number of points, pushing Duthie into a narrow lead for the last week of term.
The House Team Leaders even asked the teachers to show their focus and resilience as they were given 3 bingo cards each to complete at the same speed!
Rehearsals are well underway to prepare for the range of festive performances which take place in this final week of term. We hope to see you there!

The next parent council meeting will be held this week on Wednesday the 18th of December at 7pm. The meeting will be held virtually via Teams. If anyone would like to attend, please email ashleyroad@aberdeencity.gov.uk and request the link to the meeting.
We were hugely impressed to see our P7 Band 'Ashley Notes' perform at Aberdeen City's Winter Concert which was held at the Beach Ballroom last week. This group is made up of pupils who decided to continue on with their woodwind journey as an after school extra curricular opportunity following the universal offer in P6 with Mrs Dow.
The band performed two numbers, (see videos attached) to great applause. It was great to see the huge development in their skills since their first performance at Great Western Community Centre with their P6 colleagues a year ago. Well done all!
It was lovely to have the ELC over to perform their Winter Singalong on Wednesday morning on the school stage. The children were great and were able to adapt to being on the stage with the stage lights on in front of a packed out audience of families. Their singing was so good that a special visitor arrived to present the children with some presents to share in nursery.
'As some of you may know there is a show in theatres called 'The Scottish Ballet's Nutcracker'. The show will be on in His Majesty's Theatre in January and February and with my dance school I got to audition.
I was excited that I was given a part in the show and will be performing in the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness and His Majesty's Theatre here in Aberdeen. It was a privilege to audition for Scottish Ballet and get the chance to work with one of the top ballet schools in the United Kingdom I was very proud of myself for this achievement. ' (Fern P7)
A huge congratulations from all of us at Ashley Road Fern - you should be very proud of this achievement! Fern will be performing alongside some other ex Ashley Road pupils Christina and Nikolas who are now in S1.
This week in assembly the Super Squad undertook their first big task, sharing a presentation (including fun interactive role play) to introduce 'Learning Walkthrus' at Ashley Road. Walkthrus is a learning and teaching tool which we have chosen to adopt at Ashley Road, to build consistently high standards, and most importantly to help the children understand the 'what' and 'why' of what teachers do to help them learn in the most efficient ways possible. We view the children as partners in this process, so in assembly this week, each class shared a chosen theme that they will be working to improve together with guidance and shared vocabulary from the 'Walkthrus'. These themes ranged from questioning strategies to retrieval practice and many other areas. Hopefully in time you will start to hear the children talk about their learning in new ways as we progress in our Walkthrus journey.
It has been lovely to see lots of families in school this week for a range of parental engagement sessions. We have performances, science fairs, stay and play sessions through all of which the children have been delighted to see families join us to share in their learning. Many thanks for coming along!
A heads up about an event coming up in the Great Western Community Centre in December.
Please see attached posters for more information.
Interim reports will be coming home to families early next week. A groupcall will go out to prompt families to check school bags.
The interim reports: Share an update on the levels which children are working at presently. No written comments are included on this report.
Please see guidance attached here to support parents understanding of the different levels etc which are included in this report. If you have any queries, please get in touch via the school office.
A huge thanks you to everyone who attended the Christmas Fair last night. It was a wonderful community event, excellently organised by the PTA. Exactly what we all need to lift our spirits as the dark nights draw in. Special thanks to the PTA team who work tirelessly to pull the event together to make it to successful!
It was great to see our new team take on their leadership of AR Radio at the Christmas Fair, keeping the buzz going with lots of festive tunes. They also had the playground jumping today with their first lunchtime broadcast which was a welcome return after AR Radio was introduced last session. The Voice Box will be out next week to start gathering song requests and 'shout outs' for their session next Friday!
A super success from the P7 netball team at a festival organised by Active Schools this week. The team won 3 matches and drew 1, demonstrating excellent teamwork and communication!
At the beginning of the school year every child got a Flu Vaccine letter home to complete. The completed letters were collected by the NHS nurses and those that wished their child to get a Flu Vaccine will now get this next week either on Tuesday 3rd December or Wednesday 4th December.
If your child gets their Flu vaccine they will come home with a yellow slip and information leaflet. Please remember to check bags for this.
A lovely message of thanks from Abernecessities following the advent calendar appeal. Thanks again to all who contributed!
This year the PTA arranged two wreath making sessions as part of our winter events. One was held in the school and the other in the Great Western Community Centre. Both events were sold out, so the PTA will hope to be able to plan this event again for next year.
Some finished wreaths made by Ashley Road parents, PSAs, teachers and children during the Christmas Wreath workshops can be seen in the photo gallery. Well done to everyone who took part and a big thanks to the PTA crew who foraged for all the materials to make the wreaths so festive!
Please purchase in advance using the QR Code Above or via the link @ Ticket Tailor. https://buytickets.at/ashleyroadpta/1390686
Our Christmas Fair is on Thursday 28th November from 6.45pm to 8.30pm.
Our fair is held indoors so please be aware that there is a limit on how many tickets we can offer for this event.
The PTA are also goign to trial prepaid cards for the event. See the infomration in the poster for more details.
There are lots of exciting things planned for this year. See the posters and information above. As always we need lots of volunteers and donations for this fair to be an end of year success.
This week the P1, P2 and P3 children all received a book bag to take home.
In P1 their bags come from the Scottish Book Trust who aim to ensure every child in Scotland receives four free Bookbug Bags between birth and the age of five to help them develop an early love of stories, songs and rhymes.
The P2 and P3 Read, Write and Count bags also come from the Scottish Book Trust with support from the Scottish Government and Education Scotland. The key aim is to make sure very child has access to the magic of books. It contains books and other goodies to enjoy at home with an adult.
We hope all the children enjoy finding out what is in the bag and discovering some new books!
Staff were dumbstruck to see the amazing engineering skills of some of our P1s this week and they created this colossal and structurally sound 'fort', with internal 'rooms'! They were able to describe in great detail the various parts of the construction and really demonstrated their skills in action!
We will be holding a 'Christmas Jumper' day on December the 12th. Children are invited to come to school in a Winter/Christmas jumper (or general dress down/normal uniform if they prefer). We welcome children to bring in a donation. Our House Team Leaders are currently working on identifying a local charity for all donations to be passed on to.
This also happens to be our Christmas Dinner day, so will have some seasonal tunes and festive food to enjoy on the day too!

A big thanks to everyone who donated advent calendars for our pupil led appeal. 245 calendars have been donated this year - over 100 more than last session! They will be off to Abernecessities asap and on to local families to add a touch of something special in the run up to Christmas. Thanks again from Cecilia and team who organised the idea!
The House Team Leaders made a splash the week in assembly as the introduced a revamped and exciting house point system which they have decided to introduce to encourage us all to be our best selves, feel connected and have fun! The children were super excited see where the points would be gathered and how they could keep on eye on which house was in the lead. The team explained what points would/would not be awarded for:
House points will be awarded where children demonstrate the school values (Curious, Aspiring, Resilient, Kind, Respectful, Inclusive) on a high level.
They can be awarded by any member of the school team (Teachers/SLT/PSAs/Office Staff), and perhaps them House Team Leaders themselves in time.
Points are awarded for individual behaviours/achievements but don't mean anyone is better/perfect. We all make mistakes. We just hope to increase the frequency of our positive school values being seen in action.
We won't award house points for 'normal' behaviours e.g. saying "Thanks" if someone holds a door - this should be something we all do out of courtesy.
It was lovely to hear everyone cheer as Niamh in P7 read out some awesome writing from class this week which reflected her 'Aspiring' to achieve, for which she was awarded the very first house point, which went to Duthie.
In primary 4 we are learning how to program micro:bits (minicomputers) using block code. So far, we have created code that has transformed the micro:bits into a name badge, emotion sensor, step counter and a mini music system! We enjoy coding with micro:bits as it's very interactive and teaches us how coding work in real life situations. We have used so many skills so far, including creative thinking, problem solving and taking chances.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We are writing to provide you with details about Music Centre rehearsals and concerts in the lead up to our Festive period.
Aberdeen City Music Service is running a Junior Choir on the following Saturdays 23rd, 30th November and 7th December at Muirfield Primary from 10am-12pm. The choir will perform on Wednesday 11th December at our annual Beach Ballroom, with a rehearsal on Monday 9th in the evening at the ballroom. More details will be given once children are signed up.
The sessions will be led by – Mr Sneden (P4-6 will recognise me as “Sing-along with Sneden” from the Big Sing), and Mr Lovegrove. Miss Hamilton and Mrs Deans run the Bridge of Don feeder Junior Choir on a Monday after school which will run concurrently with us.
We are singing some wonderful fun Xmas songs, and it would be great to have a good number of children involved.
Another event that we have been asked to do is to accompany Bon Accord Brass with singing some festive carols in their spot at Duthie Park on December 14th. There are three separate performance times 11am, 12:15pm and 3pm for around 45 minutes each, where the children can sing some carols with the band as well as a potential performance on their own each time. This is event is free and we would be advised that the children wrap up warm for the day.
If you would like for your child to be involved, please can you follow this link to a google form to sign up for participation; if you have any questions please contact musicservice@aberdeencity.gov.uk
Each year we have a focus on performance and presentation through the preparation of some seasonal shows, to get us all 'in the spirit' before the winter break. Parents of each class are invited along to see the performance their child is participating in. Below are the dates and times we hope to hold these performances for you to add to your diaries. We will let you know if these are required to change for any reason. The Nursery and P1-3 performances will be held in the school hall and the P4-7 singalong will be in Holburn West Church to enable the larger audience size to attend.

We are delighted to hear that John (and his older sister Christina who used to attend AR) have been selected to become join The Scottish Sailing Team! Selection was as a result of John's development over the summer months and performance at key indicator events. John will train at residential weekends over the winter and compete at various UK wide racing events in 2025.
Well Done John!
A curious chest has been discovered in the school garden!
There is something special, or perhaps strange about this chest, particularly the lighte emenating from its core and the fog spilling from its interior.
Where did the chest come from?
Who does it belong to?
What could be inside it?
How did it get here?
Over the month of November, we will be asking the children to produce some writing to share their ideas on the origins of this peculiar object. We will be looking for the most original idea, the best use of creative figurative language and someone who manages to entertain their readers. That person will be the lucky one to open the chest and descover what is inside...!

We were delighted to be invited to go along to Aberdeen University to share our experiences of working on developing 'rights based education' at Ashley Road, and what it feels like from the perspective of the children. The four presenters (members of last years/this years LFS groups presented to around 60 student teachers across three different workshops. They showed great courage and skill presenting to what could have felt like an intimidating group. They did themselves and Ashley Road proud!
The introduction of the playground ping pong this week sparked a memory of an unbuilt ping pong table which has been sitting wrapped up and unused in the nursery container for years...! A bit of graft and it is built and in full use. The children are loving the upgrade which is allowing them to really get their rally on.
Both P6 classes enjoyed a visit from runner and charity founder - Myles Edwards.
Myles spoke about his work with the Gathimba Edwards Foundation which supports children/ young people in Kenya and in Aberdeenshire. He spoke about resilience and never giving up on our dreams. The P6s will be working with Myles this year to support their learning about Rights and sustainability
We have once again been so impressed by the number of children wishing to set up and run a lunchtime club for others across the school. We have received more than 40 applications, catering for a wide range of interests from crafts and performing arts, to quizzes, comics, planting, sports and more.
A selection of these will be run as our first block of clubs, starting the week beginning 11th November and sign-up for these will go live on Friday 1st November at 4.30pm. If your child wishes to join a club, you can sign up via the website using this link:
https://sites.google.com/ab-ed.org/ashleyroadschool/our-school/extra-curricular-activities
We ask that you please only sign your child up to one club, so that as many children as possible can benefit from the experience. Spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis, but spaces may open up again later if others drop out, so keep an eye on the website. A second block of different clubs will run after the Christmas holidays.
We can't wait to see all the creative ideas in action!
Our Multi-Sports club that is run after school on a Wednesday has some spaces available for Term 2 until Christmas. Please use the link below to sign your child up for the club.
After great success last year Cecelia would like to repeat the 'advent calendar appeal' which she launched last session. Any donations should come in to school before the 22nd of November. See the message from Cecelia below.
"I’m doing the fundraiser because some people don’t have enough money to buy things. Sometimes I see homeless people and personally I think it’s super sad that some people can’t afford homes and food or things they need to survive. So that is why I’m doing The Advent Calendar Fundraiser again. To support people who don't have the same opportunities to celebrate, enjoy and look forward to Christmas. If you would like to donate please being in calendars to school by the 22nd of November so I can donate them to Abernesecities. You don’t have to give anything in but if you can that would be delightful."
Our Green Team got going today in their work to maintain the playground planters. A huge thanks to our parent helpers who have volunteered to support the team at a lunchtime on a Friday. Special thanks to Mrs Whitcombe and her helpers who did a lot of weeding of the planters over the October break. Hopefully with some planning and work from the 'Green Team' we will see the planters flourish through the coming seasons.
A huge thanks once again to the PTA for funding the annual Panto this morning. This year the show was Aladdin! The children definitely enjoyed the show with lots of active participation. A special thank you does have to go to four teachers who got up and joined in the dance section during the show. They mostly volunteered!
Aberdeen Squash & Racketball Club (Mannofield) have been in touch offering some squash sessions for pupils at Ashley Road. The offer is for a 4 week block starting next week on a Monday and a Thursday. To find out more infomration and sign up please see the links below:

Following the success of our new 'Book Buddy' initiative last year, we are pleased to be running it again this session. Thank you to our parent volunteers who have signed up to come in and be a Buddy for some of our learners. These regular, short sessions of paired reading are a valuable way to boost confidence in reading.
If you are interested in becoming a 'Book Buddy' it is not too late - simply sign up using the link below and we will get back to you in due course. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqvn4GAx0n2F5QjTH0lSzmMvySRO8DZgRMPyff5j3y9pq-kQ/viewform
Our Play Leaders team have kicked into full drive this week with lots of creative ideas to get the children busy and having fun over break and lunchtimes. This week they have managed the addition of a 'bowling alley' and new 'playground ping pong' activities to the playground which have been described as 'awesome' by many of their peers.
The team have also introduced three coloured zones (matching the new blue and green lines on the playground) with matching equipment to keep the playground organised and to try to minimise loss of equipment as it bounces over the walls!
The Play Leaders shared a design competition in our assemblies this week - to come up with designs which can be applied to our school playground. Any designs should be submitted to the play leaders by Friday the 11th of November. The design rules are listed below:
DESIGNS CAN NOT INCLUDE CURVES - all lines in the designs must be straight.
Designs can be drawn on paper or digital
Designs should help children to play games but should be open ended to allow them to be used in a variety of ways.
Designs should be limited to the following colours. Light green, dark green, white, light blue, dark blue, orange, red, purple, pink and yellow.
BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN
If you have been in school this term, you may have noticed the new umbrella installation over the library area. This is part of a national project called the 'Neurodiversity Umbrella Project'. The project aims to provide an uplifting visual representation of all the different minds we have here in the UK.
"Every Umbrella Project installation helps to raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity. Thousands of colourful umbrellas are strung together over public spaces, in schools, and in company buildings around the nation. Each display is designed to represent the one in five of us who have a neurodevelopmental condition, such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia or Tourette’s syndrome. These conditions fall under the umbrella term of neurodiversity.
We are changing the perception of neurodiverse/neurodivergent people and celebrating all the many strengths that come from thinking differently."
We would like to give our children and families the opportunity to add to the display to help it reflect our school community. Therefore, we are offering the opportunity for interested children/families to design and produce a 'hot air balloon' on the theme of neurodiversity. We have a limited number of these blank hot air balloons which can be requested via the attached form for families to design and create at home to return to school to be added to the display. The balloons are fragile so designs will have to be added carefully.
Themes might include:
To reflect the experience of someone with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Anxiety etc
A design to show the types of supports which someone might need.
To encourage recognition/respect for individuals who are not neurotypical.
We would ask that a small written statement come with the design to explain the thinking behind it.
If you are interested in designing a ballon, please complete the attached form.

Our newly formed 'Super Squad' met for the first time this week and got stuck straight into planning for some school improvements . They will work alongside the Leadership Team and wider staff, using child friendly versions of our School Improvement Plan and the 'How Good Is Our School?' framework to help us evaluate our next steps and put them into action. They also have plenty ideas of their own for projects they are keen to take forward. Watch this space!
A lovely photo shared by a family of the aurora over the school playground last night. Wishing everyone a relaxing October break. We will see you all in the new term!
Have a look at the right of the Month. Our rights slides are shared with all classes to encourage discussion around a focus right to help children reflect on how we (and they) can help to ensure their rights are in action in our school, the local community and beyond.
Looking to stay active and find something fun to do in the October holidays, well here are a few great opportunities to keep you and the family on the move and entertained!
Dinosaur trails - they're roarsome!
Iconic Bricks free dinosaur trail - Saturday 12 October to Sunday 27 October
A total of 18 dinosaur brick models have been placed across the city centre - can you find them all?
Hidden Lego Minifigure free trail - Saturday 12 October to Sunday 27 October
You can also look out for the Hidden Lego Minifigures, small brick figurines hidden across ten shop windows in Upperkirkgate and Belmont Street! Once each minifigure has been found, you can enter our prize draw to win one of 10 Aberdeen Gift Cards worth £20 that can be used businesses across the city!
There is also a selection 27 Walking trail guides to download. You can print them to help you explore the beautiful and historic city of Aberdeen. Follow the maps to discover historical and natural gems around the city - you can also cycle on many of the trails.
No need for Mr Middleton, Miss Smith or Mr Rae any more, so many of our P7s have stepped up to take on leadership roles that we may become surplus to requirements!
We can't wait to hear their ideas and see what they are able to achieve this session!
A big 'well done' to our House Team Leaders on their first school 'Ethos Event' this session. The children have had a great day around school with their teddies in tow. The Teddy Bear Hospital went down a storm, and many many teddies received vital medical treatment over lunchtime from a capable medical crew. Between the 'Guess The Bear's Birthday' competition and donations which came in today the group were able to raise a total of £237.16 for Children in Need. I'm sure Pudsey will be delighted!
Following the success of our new 'Book Buddy' initiative last year, we are keen to run it again this year and so are looking for volunteer parents/carers/grandparents who would like to come in and be a Buddy for some of our children who would benefit from short, daily opportunities to read with an adult on a 1:1 or small group basis.
All that is required is for you to listen to and support a child as they read a book provided by school. Sessions will run each morning from roughly 9.05-9.30am, with children from a range of age groups taking part. We will start this initiative early next term.
If you are keen to help, and can ideally come in on two mornings per week, please complete the form below to let us know of your availability.

P6Rm10 enjoyed a visit from Pam Cumming from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation today. Pam spoke to P6 about asthma, sharing how we can help someone who experiences an asthma attack. This was a really valuable lesson for everyone.
Celebrating some awesome skills and achievements in school this week.
Addison who went through a gruelling process to gain her black belt in kickboxing.
The amazing skills on show in the artwork created by Satvik.
The super speed on of Harris as he took part in the 1k race at Prime4 as part of the GEF Safari Series.
Amazing work all!
We are delighted to welcome our newly elected House Team Leaders to their roles. Their first task was to present in assembly this week (with purposely short preparation time), sharing news and memories from P7s trip to Dalguise last week. They did a fantastic job. They also manage to squeeze in their first 'promise' in action - Teddy Day which will be happening next week. I'm sure we will see them get lots of new ideas in action over the next year. Good luck team!
Aberdeen City Council is currently conducting a feasibility study, to identify the options for making improvements to the suitability of our Victorian school buildings. As part of the feasibility study, ACC has launched an online survey, to gather the views of stakeholders on which elements of the school buildings they would wish to see improved. They are keen to gather feedback from pupils, parents, staff, and anyone else with a connection to the schools which have Victorian buildings.
Please see the attached letter and link to the survey.
Last week lots of our P7s set off to Dalguise for a week of outdoor adventure at the PLG centre. We were so impressed by how well the children represented the school and themselves while they were away. They really demonstrated skills of courage, risk taking and resilience as they challenged themselves on the different activities. Memories made for a lifetime.
We are excited to see the Primary Seven Band project get up and running this year. This was open to those children who learnt to play a wind instrument last year in P6 and wanted to continue to develop their skills. The band have been invited to perform at the Aberdeen City Music Service Winter Concert on Wednesday 11th June at the Beach Ballroom. You can listen to them practicing one of their songs with Miss Dow in the video!
On Friday the 11th (the last day of the first term), the House Team Leaders are running a casual clothes and teddy day mixed together.
Children can bring in a beloved teddy as long as it doesn't have too much sentimental value, and can wear casual clothes for the day. these can be any comfy clothes that you want to wear (apart from football kits).
The House Team Leaders will be running a teddy hospital over break/lunchtime where we will supply bandages for any emergency falls.

Save the Date: The PTA Christmas Fair will take place on Thursday 28th November. More information to come soon.
A reminder to all families that younger children should not be dropped off at school before 8:50am as there is no supervision in the playground before this time.
As we have a number of pupils and staff members with nut allergies, we request that families do not provide nuts and products that contain nuts for snacks or packed lunches. School lunches are already planned on this basis. We appreciate your support in keeping everyone safe.
Following a successful interview, Hannah Nicholson has been appointed as our new Principal Teacher. She will be starting with us for three days a week following the October break.
Parentkind, the charity that supports school PTAs, have teamed up with Asda, who is making millions of pounds available to donate to primary schools across the UK through their ‘Cashpot for Schools’ initiative.
All you have to do is opt in through the Asda Rewards app, choose our primary school, shop and scan in store or shop online at Asda.com between 2nd September and 30th November 2024. Asda will donate 0.5% of the value of your shop to our PTA. Every time somebody opts in, Asda will give an additional £1 to the school Cashpot, plus, Asda are also giving £50 to every school to get them started.
Asda has joined forces with Joe Wicks to support the initiative – look out for the TV advert, radio ads and social media coverage.
Asda does the rest, all money raised will be donated to schools to spend on the things they need the most.
At Ashley Road we have had a big focus on developing our approach to music including teaching and skills development across the whole school. Our latest new resource is a class set of drum sticks. Mrs McTaggart has been working with classes to develop their drumming skills in a fun way. Classes using them have been looking to memorise and perform rhythms with increasing aural memory and to play as part of an ensemble. They need to learn how to hold the sticks correctly, copy and repeat rhythms, spot and fix mistakes, perform as a whole class as well as composing their own rhythms and songs in a smaller group. On Wednesday one of the P6 classes put on a performance for Mr Rae. The video shows them playing along to the William Tell Overture in which the children were learning syncopation - which means playing off the beat. They sounded amazing and Mr Rae was very impressed!
Our P7s have been working hard on their House Leader speeches over the last few weeks. Each class nominated two children per house to go forward to the whole school vote. Those selected had the daunting task of giving their speech to an assembly of P3-7 children last Friday. What a great job they did and all of them could have been fantastic House Leaders! Once again there were a range of skills on show from communicating, presenting, leading, voice projection, decision making, resilience and making judgements to name but a few. All the children should be so proud of their efforts and their speeches as they were fantastic. There were also some interesting campaign promises that made some staff raise their eyebrows! I look forward to seeing how many are achieved. The children were told the results of the vote on their way to Dalguise. Look out for the official school post next week to introduce you all to our new House Team Leaders!
Last week saw the revival of the P1-Parent lunch. It was great to see the parents coming in to enjoy having lunch with their child. Some parents chose to have a school lunch whereas other parents chose to take a packed lunch like their child or just to sit with their child. Parents were able to see the independent skills the children have developed in following the lunchtime routines in just a few short weeks. Some parents who tried the school dinners also commented that it had exceeded their expectations! It was great to have so many parents in to have lunch with their child and the atmosphere was lovely in the hall. Some parents even managed to stay and play in the playground for a short time before leaving - making the most of the experience. This will be come a regular fixture again in the P1 transition calendar from now on.
For any P7 families unable to attend the Dalguise parent information event on Wednesday this week, please see the attached slides with helpful information, hints and tips to ensure your child is prepared for the trip. The countdown is on...!
It is that time of year again to start planning for our Pupil Led Lunchtime Clubs this session! There will be two six week block again this year, with block 1 starting week beginning the 11th of November and block 2 running from week beginning the 20th of January. To help us get all the planning started, we are looking for applications from pupils P4-7, who are keen to run a club on a theme of their choice. Staff members help to facilitate the club provision, but an important part of this scheme is the leadership and wider skill development shown by the children running the clubs! Previous club leaders have reflected on how much they learned through the process and how tricky it actually was! Any interested children/groups should gather their ideas and submit an application form, considering all the information requested. In the past, pupils have made some fantastic video clips to advertise their club, these can be attached to their application.
Please remember, these clubs rely entirely on staff members giving up some of their lunch breaks voluntarily. Based on previous demand, we will not be able to support all groups who put an application forward. Preference will be given to those who haven't had the opportunity previously.
We look forward to seeing the exciting ideas the children come up with!
Any children who want to take part in the competition should design a Comm-Con 2024 Logo. All submitted designs will still be displayed on the day and on socials/websites.
Designs should be emailed to hello@gwccentre.co.uk or dropped off at Great Western Community Centre by the 26th of September.
The winning design:
Peacock and the Worm will burn the winning logo design into a screen ready for the day and it will be the main printing design during the workshop. The winning logo will also be used to make badges on the day.
The Great Western Community Trust is organising an event at Holburn West Community Centre on Sunday, 29th September.

A big thanks to everyone who was able to make it along to our open afternoons this week. It was great to see everyone who was able to drop in and informally visit the class/see your child in their new classroom. Parent meeting appointments will be arranged later this term to give you the opportunity to talk with teachers and find out more about how your child has settled in/made progress this term.
The PTA/Parent Council Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday the 2nd of October at 7pm in the school dining hall. This is an opportunity to hear about the work of both committees and consider if you feel you could contribute to their work in any way (large or small) over the next school session. There is no pressure to 'join' a committee so if you would like to come along and listen, please do.
This week the children had some fun exploring the world of Mr Dahl in assembly. His use of vocabulary (made up and real), off the wall characters and out of the ordinary plots have helped him keep the crown of 'favourite author' for many years. It was lovely to see this enjoyment of his books is still alive an well in the new generations!
We are delighted to introduce our new Learning For Sustainability team for this school year. We have no doubt that they will do an excellent job in keeping Eco, Rights and Global themes high on the agenda this school year. They have already come up with the following points they would like to focus on this term:
Litter picking rota and expectations
Joke of the week (this has been missed apparently)
Plan of playground planters and suggested activities
Monitoring of fruit at break time
Discussion about Wrapper Free Wednesday - bin or keep
Contacting ACC regarding recycling bins in playground
Our playground planters need a touch of TLC and we are hoping to find a small team of willing parent helpers who would be happy to come in to school over lunchtimes (between around 12:45 and 1:15) to work with small groups of pupils to weed, prune and water the plants. This could be done on a relatively flexible basis, so if you think you could help, please drop a quick email to ashleyroad@aberdeencity.gov.uk and let us know. We will be in touch asap.
Each year all schools across Aberdeen City review how things are going and set out a 'School Improvement Plan' for the new session. Our plan for 24-25, has four areas:
How We Teach
Happy, Healthy and Enriched
What We Teach
Fact, Story, Action
The actions associated have been summarised in the attached image. If you feel you can help us with any of these areas, please get in touch!
Please see the attached survey regarding the 'Pupil Equity Fund' at Ashley Road School. The information included aims to inform families of how this money has been spent during the previous session (April 23 - April 24) and consult on parental views on how this spend should be managed during this financial year.
The Grant , provided by the Scottish Government, comes with restrictions on how it can be spent. It is given to school to help us support children who experience barriers to learning and who might be falling behind or not getting the same chances in their education because their family is experiencing poverty or other financial difficulties.
Please take a few minutes to read through the information in the form and answer just three short questions. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Last week our assembly was based on the concept of 'Growth Mindset' linked with the amazing resilience and courage being shown by the amazing Paralympians in Paris this month. We looked at video clips of two case studies to see how two athletes had overcome significant challenges and their own self doubt to have huge achievements. This helped us keep some daily school challenges in perspective and consider the language we use when we talk about the difficult next steps we sometimes have to take. I can't do that... yet.
We are delighted to welcome everyone back at the beginning of what I'm sure will be another fun packed year! Whether you are returning to familiar hallways or stepping in to a new environment, we hope each day this year will be an opportunity to explore new ideas, make lasting friendships and show our skills. Let's make this year the best one yet!
School doors are secure to ensure that our children are safe throughout the school day. All visitors will be asked to wait in the vestibule area to maintain building security.
After 3:15, the school building is used by the after school club. To meet the safety standards required by Care Inspectorate, there can be no unsupervised individuals in the building during their hours. Resultantly children and families cannot be admitted to the building after school, without a staff member staying with them. This includes children who may wish to use the toilet after school.
In line with ACC policy, dogs should not be brought into the school premises (even when being carried), or left tied up at the entrance points on Ashley Road or Ashley Park Drive.
You may have noticed signage on the school gates, requesting that all visitors to school close gates fully behind them. Please do this at all times to ensure our playground is as secure as possible.
We ask that families do not enter the playground for pick up until 3:15, to ensure that teachers are able to see all pupils in their class while lining up at the end of the day. (Families collecting children from nursery at 3:00 should wait beside the picnic benches.)
Pick-up arrangements for pupils at the end of the school day should only be changed in an emergency. Where this information is provided very close to the end of the school day, it may not be possible for office staff to inform class teachers before the bell time.
Every year we hold an informal 'open afternoon' early in the session, to give families the opportunity to come into the school building, meet the teachers, see their child's new classroom and perhaps take part in an activity with their child. This is an informal 'drop in' situation and not a presentation of any kind.
The classrooms will be very busy, so we ask that families to attend on the following dates to ensure classrooms are less overcrowded.
Families with surnames starting with A - M - Monday the 9th of September - 2:15 - 3:00
Families with surnames starting with N - Z - Tuesday the 10th of September - 2:15 - 3:00
No more than two adults per child.
These visits are only for P2-7 only as it could be a bit overwhelming for P1's at this point in the year.
This week we gathered out P7 year group together to set the groundwork in terms of expectations and opportunities which come as part of being the eldest children in school.
House Team Leaders
Super Squad (Improvement Squad last session)
Playground Leaders
Yearbook Team
It was great to see so many children were keen to put themselves forward for the roles, knowing the rigorous interview election/interview processes they would have to go though and the voluntary time commitment which would be involved.
We also spoke about the importance of all P7s demonstrating their strong character and the school values as role models through their daily interactions and experiences in school. I am sure they will make us proud.
The school calendar, (which can be found HERE) has been updated with some key dates for the session so you can pencil them into diaries ahead of time. More will be added as we get further into the year. Please remember all dates may be subject to change if required. Check the calendar for dates such as:
Open Afternoons
P1 Curriculum Evening
Dalguise Information Event (for parents of P7's going to Dalguise this session)
Parents Meeting Dates throughout the session
This session we have planned out some of the awareness events/whole school learning focus blocks which we will explore in assemblies, in class and through shared activities. We hope that by sharing this now, any families who have particular skills, interests or connections which may help us to bring these learning themes to life, will be able to offer their support! If you feel you may be able to support us in any way, please give us an 'offer' via the Voice Box form. We would love to hear from you!
We are delighted to share that the project to open up Room 4 and Room 5 to allow our P1s to access one large shared classroom this session was able to go ahead over the summer break. You will see from the photos attached the huge difference this has made to the space, now enabling our staff and children to collaborate in this open 'free flow' space. We have been excited to see how the space works in practice with our new P1's and have been very encouraged by their seamless use of the space this week! To ensure the classes are able to have time in their own spaces, we have added a large curtain to enable the classes to be closed off as and when needed.
The Hockey club will be starting up again for P5s to P7s from Monday the 26th of August and P4s will be welcome to come along from September 2nd? The club runs from Rubislaw Astro on a weekly basis.
If you have any questions, please contact Emma on: emmamcara@hotmail.co.uk
At the beginning of each session, we like to take a class photos of children as they start their year in a new year group. Where consents allow, we share these with families via Seesaw classrooms at no cost to families. Professional photos are taken later in the sessions for families to purchase if they wish.
These photos will be taken on Monday the 2nd of September. We will be unable to retake photos if anyone is absent on the day.
The extra-curricular clubs run through Active Schools are looking to start back up next week. If you would like to sign your child up for any of these please use the links below. Clubs will start next week. Other clubs, Like the P5-6/P7 Netball, will also be looking to start again and the sign up for these will be added to the News page when we have them.
