Keep track of how many points each house has earned. Points are awarded based on the schools values ' Curious, aspiring, resilient minds and kind, respectful, inclusive hearts'.
A huge well done to writers across the school who really pushed themselves to uplevel their writing for this term's writing engagement challenge. We saw entries in a range of genre's, with different character perspectives, with awesome use of descriptive techniques and unexpected plot twists, so judging the writing was as hard as ever. The attached slides include feedback for the entries from each class to celebrate their success. See the winners below of each category.
Early - Ellen, P1 Green
First - Amber M, P4 Room 8
Second - Gaurav, P5 Room 13
Overall - Callum, P6 - Room 15
Eilidh wanted to share her gymnastics 🤸♀️ news ! After her last competition she was selected to join the development squad and over the weekend was competing with them. Her floor routine was pristine and got gold for floor & bronze for vault & bronze overall ! She did so well especially being so young. She worked so hard & results paid off. 🌟🌟🌟 Well done Eilidh!
Active Schools are looking to increase the amount of girls who play football across the city. Currently just over 1000 children take part in football across the City and Shire but only 98 of those are girls.
Active schools are looking to increase the number of girls playing football over the summer term launching a Tuesday session from 6-7.30pm at Harlaw for girls to play 5-a-side. No football knowledge is required but an adult volunteer is needed per team. This volunteer will require an Active Schools PVG.
If you are interested or want to find out more please Email or call Wendy Carrick. Details can be found on the attached poster.
Well done to Cecilia again this year for her work on the Advent Calendar Appeal, gathering a massive 105 advent calendars to be gifted to local children by Abernecessities . A big thanks to all the families who contributed to the collection!
Next term we will celebrate Burns Day with a whole school event on Monday 19th January. This will involve classes seeing a show with traditional toasts and speeches as well as poetry reading and dancing. Each class will also get to enjoy a session of Scottish Ceilidh Dancing with another year group along with an opportunity to have some class community time to enjoy a juice and a piece of shortbread. Classes will also spend some time looking at different types of poetry during the start of the term as well. To prepare for this we are looking for children from P5-7 to audition to read of speeches or toasts as well as children who would like to read out some poetry. The audition pieces are attached in the slides to practice over the holidays. Auditions will begin on the first week back.
Next term we will have some Sport Science Students working in school to support PE. As part of their placement they will also run a 3 week block of multi sports club for P1-3. This will be a girls only session as this is a focus across the city to improve particpation in sport by girls. These sessions will be supported by our Active Schools Co-ordinator as well.
These 30 minute session will take place on a Monday from 3.15-3.45 on the the following dates: 12th, 19th and 26th January.
Please see the link below to sign up your child for the club:
The third block of the afterschool Multi-Sport Club run by our Active Schools Support Assistant will start after the Christmas Holidays. This time it will be for P4-7 children.
This will run on a Wednesday from 7th January until Wednesday 25th March at the school from 3.15-4.15pm.
Places are limited and the link to sign your child up will go live on Friday 19th December at 6pm.

Yet again some outstanding performances from our P1-3s as they delivered 'Peter Pan' this week. Our P3 performers were particularly impressive, dealing with a complex script, quick changes, staging, scenery and props. Even adding in wireless mics this year didn't phase theP3 crew. A huge thanks to the P3 teachers in particular who go above and beyond to pull together a performance to this quality, with space for all the children to shine.
A big thanks to the huge number of families who came along to support the annual P4-7 festive singalong at Great Western Community Centre. An event that many children and families look forward to each year, the children did themselves proud with some tuneful singing and rhythmic performances. The surprise use of glow sticks, mid 'Snowman' certainly kept us all on our toes too!
A big thank you to everyone who took part in the House Team Leader's 'Icon Day' this term. Over £280 pounds was raised, which was donated to support Blood Canver UK.
House Team Leaders Josh and Harvey are delighted to see one of their speech promises becoming a reality as the bike shelter in the rear playground has been replaced and now has a non leaking roof! Early next term we hope to see some scooter and bike pods installed in the rear playground, supporting children and families to make active travel choices. #pupil voice in action
Our Super Squad were determined the reinstate the Ashley Road 'Birthday Bunch' and, after a recruitment process looking for enthusiastic individuals willing to don the birthday hats and glasses, we now have two Birthday Bunch teams who have been busy spreading the birthday cheer with gusto!
Our P7 Woodwind Band did us proud again when they took to the stage at a packed Beach Ballroom to perform as part of the Aberdeen City Music Service Festive Concert. They performed 'Coventry Carol' and 'Mary Did You Know?' and, for their first public performance as a group, did a fantastic job. Even better, they were accompanied by some Ashley Road alumni, inspiring them as to what they may be able to achieve in a few years' time. A big thank you to Miss Dow for all her hard work and patience in getting our groups ready for these opportunities.
On Wednesday it was Christmas Lunch day. We had lots of children enjoying the festive lunch that was on offer and others who chose to have a packed lunch. All enjoyed the change in the dining room of festive hats being worn by the staff along with Mr Rae being festive DJ for the session. It was great to hear the various renditions of Christmas classics with adapted lyrics being sung at times! The overall winner seemed to be the ice cream for dessert rather than the brussel sprouts.
We are proud to say that we have not one but two Ashley Road pupils who have made it through to round 2 of the 'BBC 500 Words' writing competition. Clemmie and Eloisa have both produced fantastic short stories, which they shared with a captive audience during last week's Clan time. The girls' stories will now be judged again by professionals from The Reading Agency, with the overall winners receiving book bundles and the chance to have their story illustrated by a professional illustrator! We wish both girls the best of luck in the next round.
On Thursday we had our ECL performing their winter songs on the stage. The children all did so well with some tricky songs to sing especially as they were also on the stage in front of lots of parents with the stage lights on. It was lovely to see their enthusiasm and the audience certainly enjoyed their performance. The singing was so good that they even had a visitor appear to give them all a present. Well done!
Friday the 12th of December will be our 'Christmas Jumper' day. Children are welcome to come in wearing something cosy and festive. If they would rather not, 'dressing down' or wearing school uniform are always an option.
Our school Christmas lunch will be on Tuesday the 16th of December. This can be ordered in the usual way via ParentPay/in classrooms in the morning.
The House Leader team would like to invite you to take part in ICON day. This is your chance to come to school as your favourite sports person, favourite singer, favourite celebrity or someone you think is 'iconic'! Casual clothes or school uniforms are fine too. We would also like you to bring in £1 donation for charity if you could. All donations will go to Blood Cancer UK.
There will also be a class catwalk with the most inspired costumes earning house points! This will happen on the 8th of December. We hope it is a day to remember.

We ask that no more than two family members come along to performances, to ensure that we are able to operate safely within fire risk assessments/guidance.

Josh and Harvey have been hard at work applying their maths skills in the real world as they 'measure up' our existing bike shelter and space in the rear playground. We are delighted to have found a source of funding to replace our existing bike shelter (which has seen better days) and add some 'Bike Pods' and 'Scooter Pods' to the rear playground to significantly increase the storage options for those who are keen to choose more active ways of travelling to school! Now Josh and Harvey are 'on the case', we hope to see these improvements in place early in the new year!
A big well done and thank you to our House Team Leaders who put on their first House Challenge events this week, going for an old classic 'Bingo'. The event was exceptionally well organised by the HTL crew and concentration filled the room as the competitive spirit kicked in! A huge number of house points were won, but it was Seaton and Hazlehead who took home the final 'BINGO' calls.
Following a visit from Pam Cumming at the Asthma and Allergies Foundation, the children P5 were set a challenge to use their creative skills to make something which would help to share the important messages they had learned through the allergy workshop. It was wonderful to see that one child, Gasim really went wild with creativity, writing a rap, to help people remember how to administer an Epi Pen. It is so cool, he had staff 'grooving' around school for the rest of the day. Well done Gasim, amazing creative work!
Inspired by Gasim's rap, we decided to create a new song for our 'Clan Time' sessions each week to keep building our community spirit and express our vocal talents at the same time. The children (and staff) had great fun coming up with some snazzy dance moves. The song and words are attached below so children can practise at home before Clan Time next week if they wish! I know at least one enthuisasic P5 has been asking when it would be shared all week!
On Thursday we had our annual PTA Christmas Fair. Once again this was a sell out and it was great to see so many families coming and enjoying all that was on offer. A huge thanks has to go to the PTA who have been busy organising the fair for the last 3 months. A lot of preparation goes into planning such a big event. A big thank you also has to go to all our volunteers who came and helped support a stall/area and keep the fair running. Without the volunteers we would not be able to run the fair. Another thank you has to go to all the people who donated prizes for the raffle and all the chocolate and bottles for the stalls. One 'shout out' for Kay Somshor who has now stepped down as Chair of the PTA - she has worked hard with the PTA for the last 3 years to plan all the events with the committee team. It is definitely time to sit back and relax, although I know she will continue to support the PTA events for the rest of this session. We will announce the winning 'House Hamper', with the most tickets bought at Clan Time next week.
Well done to the P6/7 netball team who took part in their first netball festival this week. Kingswells, Greyhope, Bridge of Don, Culter and Ashley Road all took part, with Ashley Road securing 2 wins!
Due to the possible choking and 'trip and fall' hazards which lollipops can present within busy environments, we ask that families do not send them into school for snack or lunches.
Interim Reports will be coming home in school bags today (28/11/25). These reports share an update on the levels which children are working at presently. No written comments are included on this report. The guidance attached here provides some detail regarding what the various levels/statements on the report mean. If you are unclear on the meaning of any of the information included, please feel free to get in touch, via the main school office.
Aberdeen Sports Village is home to Aberdeen Diving Club—the second-largest diving club in Scotland. Every couple of years, the club visits Aberdeen City schools as part of its Talent Identification Program (TID), aimed at spotting promising young divers and encouraging more young people to take up the sport.
Most recent program in 2023, two Ashley Road pupils - Saoirse Cullen and Brooke Gillespie were 2 of the 30 children selected and now compete at national level. Last weekend they took part in Level 2 SASA competition in Dundee. Brooke secured 2nd Place in her age group - Under 13. Saoirse was the youngest diver at the Under 9 level and was the only one taking part in her age group.
Maya was also selected to join the club through “Learn to Dive” programme and competed at SASA Level and got first place for her category - Mini E’s. Saoirse and Maya’s current coach, Robyn Low, also went to Ashley Road and was selected in the first ever identification program in 2015.
Ashley Road also has a history of producing exceptional talent. Back in 2017, Noah Penman, then a P7 pupil, was selected through TID. Since then, Noah has become an internationally successful diver. In May 2025, he announced his arrival on the Senior GB team after winning silver in the 3m springboard at the European Championships in Turkey.
Following an incredible season, he was awarded Diving Emerging Athlete of the Year at the 2025 Aquatics GB Awards.
Look out for him at the next Olympics !!!
Our pupil led lunchtime clubs are now underway and we have enjoyed seeing our young leaders putting their ideas into action. Those who have signed up have been treated to a range of creative activities throughout the week, from dance to origami and even outer space! We look forward or seeing how the clubs and leaders' confidence develop over the next few weeks.
The appearance of a range of strange objects around school over the last week has caused a lot of chatter, theorising and creative thinking. The addition of the flabergasting 'CCTV' clips has added to the mystery. It has been great to see the detective work going on, full lists of clues and speculation rife as the children have really engaged in the fun of the unexplained... A few children have asked... maybe we will do some writing about this. Well... maybe we will.
Classes throughout school have been engaged in a range of road safety learning activities this week, highlighting the importance of safe crossing, especially as the days get darker through the winter season.
Concerns have been raised by local residents who frequently witness illegal parking, on double yellow lines, pavements, the yellow zig zags and across their driveways. Again we ask in the strongest possible way that families consider their behaviour when driving and parking on the streets around school. These poor behaviours are putting out children at risk which is frankly unacceptable. We have contacted the roads team at the local council and have requested frequent visits by traffic wardens in order to address this irresponsible behaviour.
Our Eco group spoke in Clan Time this week to share that they have planned a 'wrapper free' week next week. They would encourage all children to do their bit to lessen our impact on the environment by bringing snacks in reusable containers rather than disposable wrappers. They were particularly passionate about the impact of dropped litter on local wildlife, so hopefully this initiative will help!
Hello all,
The House Leader team would like to invite you to take part in ICON day. This is your chance to come to school as your favourite sports person, favourite singer, favourite celebrity or someone you think is 'iconic'! Casual clothes or school uniforms are fine too. We would also like you to bring in £1 donation for charity if you could. All donations will go to...........
There will also be a class catwalk with the most inspired costumes earning house points! This will happen on the 8th of December. We hope it is a day to remember.
House Team Leaders (Pupil Post)
In the run up to the Christmas Fair next week, our House Team leaders will be selling tickets for the 'House Hampers' over lunchtimes to give children the opportunity to get their names in the draw. Tickets will also be sold (and drawn) at the Christmas Fair on the 27th. As an added bonus, the hamper with the most tickets sold will win 30 points for their house.
Tickets are £2 each. Children can bring money into school on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday next week if the wish to purchase a ticket.
This week, one half of our newly formed Super Squad school improvement group took part in their first pupil trio visit at Skene Square School, joined also by a group from Broomhill School. Pupils were treated to a tour of the school before setting to work on some writing moderation, sharing ideas from each of the three schools and exploring the tools that teachers use to set next steps in writing. They are now ready to bring some of these ideas back to Ashley Road and are looking forward to taking their turn as trio hosts when the other schools visit us next term.
Last session a team of staff spent a lot of time developing a 'Maths Strategy Progression' for Ashley Road School.
The progression was created with the aim of slimming down the range of strategies taught in school to help children master these.
To ensure that strategies taught included concrete, pictorial, mental and written approaches.
To define the stage in learning which strategies should be introduced to learners.
The progression includes materials related to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including an overview page for each which breaks down the levels strategies are introduced. These are Early (Gold), First (Bronze, Silver Gold) Second (Bronze, Silver, Gold). Each column on the overview page links to a slide like the example below which provides a description of the strategy and how it can be used.
We shared this progression with the children in clan time this week, and it has been added to the home learning library for parents to access should they wish. (A school Google login is required to access the file).
Building on the success from previous years, one of our P7 pupils is again organising the advent calendar appeal. Her message to families reads:
Many children across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire won't get to enjoy the magic of the festive season... but you can help!
Bring in a chocolate advent calendar and we'll donate them to AberNecessities who will share them with children who need a little extra Christmas magic.
Donations should be handed in on or before Thursday the 28th of November.
A big thanks to everyone who is able to support!
“We’re excited to let you know that Free Parks Tennis is starting this Sunday at Ruthrieston outdoor sports centre! Free Parks Tennis is a fun, friendly way for everyone to get active and enjoy tennis in local parks. It’s all about enjoyment, community, and being active outdoors — no membership, no pressure, just turn up and play! Equipment will be provided, so all you need to bring is comfy practical clothes (wrap up warm).
Volunteer opportunity - We’re always looking for friendly volunteers to help support sessions, welcome players, and keep things running smoothly. If you’re interested in volunteering, get in touch — it’s a great way to meet people and give back to your community!
Volunteers will need to have PVG through Sport Aberdeen.”
Thanks to all who participated in the PTA Halloween Balloon Race 2025, we raised £318!
And congratulations to Andrew Craig from Ashley Road who came in overall second in race and won an Alexa!

Our PSA team has been busy working with the Educational Psychology service over the past year to understand and embed an 'Emotion Coaching' approach, a strategy which helps children understand and manage their emotions by coaching them through their feelings, using a four step prcoess. During Clan time last week, pupils had the chance (with the help of some roleplay by the SLT team!) to try out the Emotion Coaching steps themselves, giving them a better understanding of why and how the approach is used. Some of our senior pupils are now keen to become Emotion Coachers too and will work with the PSA team to further devvelop their skills.
This week, we (Primary 7s Jenna, Max, Louie and Eliza) performed a presentation about our school connecting with rights and how Ashley Road Primary School is a UNICEF gold rights respecting school. We went to the University of Aberdeen, and presented in front of 3 groups of aspiring students training to be teachers. It was scary at first, but overall we had a blast, it got better every time and we loved it so much! One of the students said “It is actually inspiring to see children performing a speech”. We liked this because it was a great experience and opportunity and we gained a lot of new skills like : voice projection, team work, leadership and presenting.

DONATIONS
The Ashley Road School PTA relies on donations from all those connected with the school, as well as local businesses, to fill a number of our stalls. The amount of donations we receive has a huge impact on how much we can raise for the school so that we can improve the learning experiences of our children.
We would really appreciate if you could consider donating some of the items below:
SWEET TREAT TOMBOLA
Any chocolate or sweetie items, big or small. For example, selection packs, chocolate bars, boxes of chocolates, hot chocolate, candy canes, sweetie bon-bons, Haribo mix ….
If it is sweet we want it!!!
BOTTLE STALL
Exactly as it sounds - If it's in a bottle it can go in the bottle stall! Wine, beer, tomato ketchup, bubble bath, syrup, olive oil….
Bottles | Bottles | Bottles!
EVERYONE’S A WINNER
We need as many jars, of any shape or size, filled by you with a variety of treats + sweets as you can make. This stall is always very popular and sells out fast. As the title suggests - everyone wins something! So the more jars we get, the more happy winners we have. Please write a note on your jar if the contents are vegetarian/vegan.
Donations can be delivered to the school from Monday 24th of November.
A big congrats to William who recently joined the Lynx Juniors Ice Hockey team, and took part in his first x-ice matches last weekend all the way down in Kilmarnock!
Let's hope all that padding and protective gear keeps him safe on the ice!
Thank you once again to our PTA who funded our annual Panto at the school. This year it was 'Cinderella.'
All classes went to watch the Panto which, as usual, involved lots of singing, audience interaction and hilarity. The children definitely knew how to join in with a Panto and did so with much excitement. Some of the staff even got the chance to join in with the 'Dance Off' in the first Panto and some of our brave children volunteered to take part in the second one which allowed them to show off their moves! The children enjoyed the set transformations along with a quick change of Cinderella's dress that had many children surprised.
For those children that have completed the designs last term in school they should have recieved the order form home on Friday. There is a new process this year where the ordering is now all completed online. Parents have until Monday 10th November to complete any orders.
To order you need to scan the QR code on the form or go to: www.iqcardsonline.co.uk
You will need to create an account and then log in using the school reference code and pupil code on the order form.
There are a range of products you can order with your child's design this year.
Unfortunately we do not have other copies of the forms that are sent out. If you require more help please email the PTA on: ashleyroadpta@gmail.com

Please check the age group for the club before signing up, as the timings link to upper/lower stage lunchtimes.
Our lunchtime clubs prove very popular and so we ask that you please only sign your child up to one club, to allow as many children as possible the opportunity to take part. Please also discuss the club with your child first to ensure that they do wish to attend it. If your child later changes their mind, please let the school know so that we can remove them from the list and give someone else the space.
We have been so impressed with the volume and quality of club applications this term and are delighted that so many children want to take on these leadership roles. Twenty one clubs covering a variety of interests will run across lunchtimes for the next six weeks. For those not selected to run their club this term, we will do our best to run them in Block 2, which begins next term.
We are, as ever, grateful to staff who give up their lunchtimes to support with the supervision of these activities.
We are looking forward to seeing the clubs in action soon!
Each year we have a focus on performance and presentation through the preparation of some seasonal shows, to get us all 'in the spirit' before the winter break. Parents of each class are invited along to see the performance their child is participating in. Below are the dates and times we hope to hold these performances for you to add to your diaries. We will let you know if these are required to change for any reason. The Nursery and P1-3 performances will be held in the school hall and the P4-7 singalong will be in Holburn West Community Centre to enable the larger audience size to attend.

A big congratulations to Hazlehead house, who managed to tip the balance at the final post after Seaton had been in the lead all term. This time round, a balloon drop revealed the winning house and the children (especially those from Hazlehead) were audibly delighted to see the the the colours fall into the well.
We will now trial a new way of doing the uniform shop. There will no longer be the 'drop in' uniform shop one Friday per month.
Uniform shop will be open at the start and end of each term, however if anyone needs new uniform during term time, a unfirm form should be filled in and handed in to the school office with cash or a cheque (as happens already) and it will be sent home with the child by the end of the week. I know a lot of people do this already.
If sizes ordered are not correct, they can be exchanged as long as the labels are still on them.

We are delighted to introduce our new House Team Leaders for this session.
Hazlehead Mohammed Carter Imogen
Seaton Jessica Angus Liv
Westburn Eden Aisha Josh
Duthie Rio Elise Harvey
Each year we have seen our house teams really 'push the envelope' one step further with the ambition and scale of the events an opportunities they put on for their peers. I have no doubt that these new young leaders will continue to aspire to reach these same high standards and do their 'house mates' proud. A huge congratulatoins to each one of them. We cannot wait to hear their plans and see them come to fruition.
Over the last few weeks in Clan Time, it has been wonderful to be able to share some of the amazing achievements which 'Ashley Roaders' have been having both in and out of school. This sporting selection included some awesome squash skills shown by Harris and Robin and some unbelievable diving by Maya and Saoirse. We are very proud of the hard work and resilience they show in developing the awesome skills.
If your child has achieved anything and you would like us to celebrate it, please get in touch. Share videos/photos and stories. We would love to hear from you. Email ashleyroad.enquiries@ab-ed.org to share. (Non sporting achievements are very welcome too!)

Many of our P7's have been away this week on P7 residential trip at the Dalguise Outdoor Centre in Perthshire.
We have been keeping in touch with the group and hearing about their adventures and the many lifetime memories which are being made on the trip. The children have lots to be proud of. We look forward to hearing all about it in Clan Time next week!
A HUGE thank you to Miss Smith, Mrs Nicholson, Miss Jones, Miss King and Mrs Morrison who took on the task of keeping the children safe and well for their time away. This is no small responsibility and is done entirely voluntarily.
As part of a city wide project 'Northern Lights', all schools are receiving upgrades to their digital systems and hardware in an effort to improve connectivity, reliability and opportunities in relation to digital education.
A key stage of the transition onto the new hardware and systems will be taking place for Ashley Road next week on Tuesday.
All P6 and P7 pupils will have access to 1-1 devices to use within school.
All P4-5 pupils will have access to 1-2 devices to use within school.
A 'single sign on' - The children's computer login will allow them access to all the Google applications which they can already access, and an expanded range of Microsoft tools/apps which they can access both in school and at home.
P1-3 classes will have much greater access to the Chromebooks and iPads already within school.
As part of the upgrade, children's existing usernames will be transitioned into the new networks and will change slightly, with the removal of the 'gw' at the start of the username. For example:
gw10smithjohn@ab-ed.org will now be 10smithjohn@ab-ed.org
Children will also be given a slip with a new password on Tuesday as part of the upgrade.
Still to come ... New digital display screens will be installed in every classroom to replace the existing projector screen/whiteboard set up. These should provide a much clearer image for teaching materials and allow for teachers/pupils to use the screens interactively.
Following on from the parent survey in June 2024, it is clear that the themes that the school community would like more support/advice with are:
Anxiety/Resilience,
ASN
Online Safety
The attached survey will hopefully give us a little more detail regarding where the support would be best placed and what days/times would be the best to gain good attendance at any workshops we are able to run. Please complete the brief form to help with the next stage of planning.
Last week we heard speeches presented by the candidates for the House Team Leader roles for this session. As ever the children outdid themselves. The presenting skills and creative, persuasive delivery on show were outdone only by the courage the each and every candidate showed, pushing their resilience and courage to the limit in front of over 300 of their peers. A huge well done to all. We will update you next week with photos of our new house teams.
Next up, all P7s will recieve a survey next week asking them to note interest in the wide range of leadership opportunities available across the P7 year. From the Yearbook Team. AR Radio to Super Squad, there are plenty of opportunities to go round!
A reminder to all families to ensure you are aware of and following our school Travel Plan. It sets out the safest routes to travel to and from school, encourages safe, active travel and responsible travel by car users.
Following the retirement of the School Crossing Patroller (Bob) last session, we would encourage families to review their planned route to school, highlighting the two highest risk crossing points (A map highlighting these points is included in the Travel Plan):
Crossing Ashley Road at the junction with Claremont Street:
Crossing on a junction adds an additional risk as cars are travelling from three different directions.
Cars parked on Ashley Road block the line of sight between pedestrians and drivers making this a risky place to cross.
There is no longer a crossing patroller operating on this intersection.
There are light controlled pelican crossings available at both ends of Ashley Road. These are the safest points to cross the road.
Crossing at the junction of Ashley Gardens and Ashley Park Drive:
This is a very wide junction, meaning it would take longer to cross, increasing the risk.
There are often cars parked on both long corners and down Ashley Gardens and Ashley Park Drive which limits viability for pedestrians and drivers.
An extraordinary session within an upcoming Parent Council meeting has been arranged to discuss road safety issues around the school.
Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee , who has been involved in discussions on this topic in the past, will attend this session and hear directly from the parent community. Traffic safety has been a recurring item on our Parent Council agenda for several years, as reflected in our meeting minutes, and we continue to work closely with the council to address ongoing concerns.
Meeting Details:
Date: Tuesday, 30 September
Time: 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM
Format: Online meeting (link to be shared closer to the date)
This week we had our annual P1 Parent Lunch. Parents were allowed to come and sit with their child to have lunch on Monday or Tuesday depending on their class. It was great to hear lots of positive feedback from parents about the food as well as the experience. Parents also got the opportunity to stay and play in the playground as well.
As part of Parkhill Garden Centre's Community Project, schools were asked to let them know if they wished to be part of their project. On Saturday schools that wanted to take part had the opportunity to collect some free plants and shrubs for their school. Our new Green Team will be able to look to get all the new plants added into the playground planters this week. Keep an eye out for the new plants.

It has been great to see our P5s stepping up and taking the responsibility of being buddies to our new P1s this term. They have had 'playground playdates' together and helped the P1s get used to the playground as they have settled in over their first few weeks in school. It's great to see the really nurturing and caring side of many of these children as they take on this new responsibility, which many have been looking forward to for a number of years!
A reminder for all families that our Home Learning Library is still accessible to all families with a broad range of literacy and numeracy tasks to help:
Fill 'gaps' in pupils knowledge and skills to ensure they have a strong foundation when meeting new learning and concepts in school.
Develop and reinforce key literacy and numeracy skills in preparation for life, learning and work.
Promote home/school partnerships and provide opportunities for parents, siblings, families and children to work and learn together.
Promote the value and enjoyment of lifelong learning.
Provide an opportunity for parents to gain an understanding of what and how their child is learning at school.
See below the types of resources you have access to through the library.
If you receive an error message when trying to access resources from the Home Learning Library, there is a strong likelihood that you may be logged in with a non school google account on the device. Sometimes this may be in another Google app, but this will still block your access. Log out of all Google apps and log in with your child's emailaddress@ab-ed.org account to ensure you can access the resources.
Short snappy tasks which reinforce and develop skills core to writing - Vocabulary, Openers, Connectives and Punctuation
A suggested routine for home learning for each year group, with a break down of the types of tasks and the length of time which might be helpful for your child to participate in home leaning activities across a week.
A large bank of resources for all maths topics, across the range of levels Early - Second are available. These resources include short video clips which include teaching points/demonstrations and examples to try as well as worksheets which would be printed or completed digitally.
A wide range of reading comprehension tasks are available to support pupils analysis and understanding of texts. These can be printed or completed digitally.
This section of Home Learning Library has been developed to help families understand some of the approaches used in school, that could also be reinforced at home to support efficient, lasting approaches to learning.
As part of our ongoing focus on 'Rights Respecting' work at Ashley Road, all classes spend the beginning of term one developing a unique 'Class Charter' which reflects the children and their interests. The charter acts as an agreement between the 'Rights Holders' (The children) and the 'Duty Bearers' (The adults) on how we will support and uphold key rights set out on the UNCRC for each other within our classrooms. We also have charters for the school playground, dining hall and toilet areas which were developed by our 'Super Squad' a year ago.
A big thanks to Kayleigh & Allan Brown who kindly sponsored the P5 football team, allowing them to get a new kit.
The new tops have already created a great buzz within the team. Hopefully these amazing new strips will go with our beautiful football, but regardless its giving the team a real boast and they shall wear them with great pride when representing the school this season. - P5 Coaches
On Monday and Tuesday afternoon we had our annual open afternoon. This is a great opportunity for parents to come in to their child's classroom and see the learning that has been happening so far this term. This year there was a reading focus across the school with lots of exciting opportunities to see how reading and reading skills are taught in school and the types of activities the children do to learn these important skills. A big thank you to all who were able to come in, there was a great buzz of excitement around the school by the children.
Last week we had our first 'Game On' in Clan Time, with the clans each having the opportunity to choose and play a short snappy game together. It was great to see this help them relax a bit as the gradually get to know their clan mates more week on week!
This week Primary 4 enjoyed a visit from the River Dee Trust. We learned all about the geography of the river and the amazing biodiversity that lives in and around it. Outside, we worked in groups to make models of the river, showing how the water flows from the source to the mouth of the river.
“My favourite part was finding out that salmon can jump up to 3 metres!”
“I couldn’t believe the biggest salmon can be as long as 1.5 metres – that’s taller than some of us!”
“It was amazing to see the salmon skull and to realise how big salmon can grow.”
Meet our new Rights Respecting School representatives. As a Gold Rights Respecting school we aim to ensure the UNCRC and Rights education is embedded across our community and curriculum. This session we will be working on achieving the following outcome:
Students see themselves as rights respecting global citizens and are advocates for social justice, fairness and children’s rights at home and abroad.
MESSAGE FROM THE PTA
We hope you all had a wonderful summer break. To start off the year the PTA invites you to our BACK TO SCHOOL DISCO. We’re trying something new and this year the disco will be held on:
THURSDAY (that’s right Thursday) 11th SEPTEMBER
P1-P3 | 6:15pm - 7:15pm
P4-P7 | 7:45pm - 8:45pm
Tickets can be purchased online:
https://buytickets.at/ashleyroadpta/1833563
All children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult/parent/guardian. Ratio 1 adult to 4 children. The PTA and volunteers are not responsible for child supervision.
We appreciate those that can volunteer to help us at these events. There are two slots per disco and we are asking for 9 people per slot to help. Last disco we unfortunately didn’t have enough volunteers for the first disco due to last minute cancellations and we weren’t able to provide the experience we usually do.

Please see attached 'Cyber Byte' with advice for families regarding safe use of mobile phones, an 'Whats App' in particular. This advice comes from the Police Scotland Cybercrime Harm Prevention Team who have real life experience of the negative realities of these tools when not used in a considered manner. We hope it is helpful.
Please remember that for the safety of our pupils and staff, we are a strictly 'Nut Free School' as we have members of our community with sensitive airbourne allergies. This means that no items containing nuts should be sent into school for snack or packed lunches. This includes items such as chocolate spreads where nuts are a core ingredient. Items which include 'may contain traces of nuts' are acceptable. Please follow this guidance closely to keep our children and staff safe.
Our P6 'Green Team' have been working hard over the last year, maintaining the playground platers, weeding, watering and nurturing some new growth. They are ready to hand on the torch to a new team and would like to welcome applications from P5 and P6 pupils.
Willing to work with the team on a Friday lunchtime from 1:00 - 1:30.
Have or be keen to develop 'green fingers', putting in the hard graft to look after our school playground planters.
Interested applicants should complete THIS FORM by Friday the 5th of September. Our current Green Team will review the applications and select their successors.
At the end of last term, we were delighted to receive confirmation that we have received another 'Ego Green Flag Award' to recognise all the hard work that the children staff and community do to protect our environment, led by the Learning for sustainability group. Below is the evidence folder shared and the lovely comment shared by the awarding panel. Have a look!
"Congratulations on achieving your Green Flag Award. Your Climate Action work is lovely to read. The Climate Change Week activities, including outdoor learning and writing tasks have helped build understanding across the school. It's great that these ideas were embedded throughout the curriculum, from early years to upper primary, with topics ranging from materials and life cycles to renewable energy debates. Even though the Big Battery Hunt couldn’t go ahead, your Young Journalist articles on environmental topics still made a strong impact through school displays and the website. Well done! In your Litter and Waste actions, it’s encouraging to see a mix of pupil-led initiatives and practical adjustments. The litter rota, gardening groups, and classroom responsibilities are helping develop positive habits and it’s good to see that free fruit has contributed to reducing packaging. While composting systems were difficult to implement due to costs and logistics, you’ve thought carefully about next steps and identified where further support may be needed. It’s clear the School Travel Plan, Be Safe Be Seen campaign, and traffic surveys helped raise awareness and encourage safer, more sustainable journeys. Despite some setbacks, like stolen signage and the loss of the crossing patrol, it’s great that pupil voice was used to assess impact and that parents are actively engaging with the council. Active travel activities especially Bikeability were clearly well received, and the introduction of scooters in the nursery was a nice way to encourage sustainable habits early on. Well done! Once again a big congratulations to you all, you’re all very deserving of this Green Flag Award."
As part of lots of work done last session on the development of reading skills, staff identified vocabulary development as an area of focus. Resultantly, this session we have introduced 'Words Of The Week'. These lists of words are set at two levels, 'Grasshopper' or 'Shinobi' will be shared and discussed each week in class with the hope of expanding the vocabulary the children feel comfortable reading and building into their written work. We may challenge the children on these words as we pass them in the corridor/playground, with the promise of a house point if they are 'in the know'! For children up the school who may know the definitions already, they will explore the synonyms, antonyms provided and perhaps come up with some of their own..
This comes alongside new 'Vocabulibrary' resources which sit alongside each chapter of the group novels children read P3/4-7. helping them identify and define the challenging words they might come across, even before they start reading.
Click on the Vocabulary Ninja image below to see the words of the week from this week! You could challenge your child on definitions, synonyms, antonyms or if you are super keen, even investigate the etymology of some words! We will share these each week so you can reinforce this learning at home.
Last session our House Team Leaders chose from the range of tall ships which were due to race over the summer break. The agreement was that the house who had selected the winning ship, would win house points.
Members of Seaton house were happy to hear that the winning ship was the Shabab Oman II, which had been selected by Seaton, earning them 50 house points and putting them into an early lead.
We look forward to all the challenges and house activities our new teams of House Leaders will plan for us once elected this year!
A huge thanks to the PTA for their support in funding installation of the 'Ituri' climbing frame which took place over the summer break. The children have been over the moon to see this long term aspiration finally come to fruition. It has been interesting to see the new gross motor skills and strength the children have started to develop as they try to traverse the logs and ropes.
We would encourage any families allowing their children to use the climbing frame after school hours, to supervise their children closely.
This session we have planned out some of the awareness events/whole school learning focus blocks which we will explore in assemblies, in class and through shared activities. We hope that by sharing this now, any families who have particular skills, interests or connections which may help us to bring these learning themes to life, will be able to offer their support! If you feel you may be able to support us in any way, please give us an 'offer' via the Voice Box form. We would love to hear from you!
This year we have decided to trail making a change to our 'traditional' assembly format. Children have been sorted into 'Clans' with other members of their house across the year groups. The 'Clans' will meet with each other each week, get to know each other, share achievements, hear school news, play games/sing and have fun . We hope Clan Time will offer the following bonuses:
Opportunities to get to know others beyond their own class.
A natural opportunity for children to build leadership skills.
Time to talk - balancing talk time, so children many more opportunities to talk during our together times.
Building an ethos of support across our houses.
We will be reviewing the model with the children after an initial trial to gather their feedback, but initial reactions have been very positive so far!
School doors are secure to ensure that our children are safe throughout the school day. All visitors will be asked to wait in the vestibule area to maintain building security.
After 3:15, the school building is used by the after school club. To meet the safety standards required by Care Inspectorate, there can be no unsupervised individuals in the building during their hours. Resultantly children and families cannot be admitted to the building after school, without a staff member staying with them. This includes children who may wish to use the toilet after school.
In line with ACC policy, dogs should not be brought into the school premises (even when being carried), or left tied up at the entrance points on Ashley Road or Ashley Park Drive.
You may have noticed signage on the school gates, requesting that all visitors to school close gates fully behind them. Please do this at all times to ensure our playground is as secure as possible.
We ask that families do not enter the playground for pick up until 3:15, to ensure that teachers are able to see all pupils in their class while lining up at the end of the day. (Families collecting children from nursery at 3:00 should wait beside the picnic benches.)
Pick-up arrangements for pupils at the end of the school day should only be changed in an emergency. Where this information is provided very close to the end of the school day, it may not be possible for office staff to inform class teachers before the bell time.
The climbing frame should not be used by any pupils before school as it is not supervised at this time and children should be lining up to prepare to come into school. After school, if families wish to use the climbing frame, it is a parental responsibility to supervise their children while they use it to ensure they use it safely.
At the beginning of each session, we like to take a class photos of children as they start their year in a new year group. Where consents allow, we share these with families via Seesaw classrooms at no cost to families. Professional photos are taken later in the sessions for families to purchase if they wish.
These photos will be taken on Monday the 25th of August. We will be unable to retake photos if anyone is absent on the day.
he school calendar, (which can be found HERE) has been updated with some key dates for the session so you can pencil them into diaries ahead of time. More will be added as we get further into the year. Please remember all dates may be subject to change if required. Check the calendar for dates such as:
Open Afternoons
P1 Curriculum Evening
Dalguise Information Event (for parents of P7's going to Dalguise this session)
Parents Meeting Dates throughout the session
A reminder that we have an online form to support families to provide timely feedback to the ACC catering team when issues with lunches arise. This has been added as a tab at the top of the school website and will be available via the school website under the 'Parents' tab.
Please use this form to provide feedback on the day if you are made aware of any issues regarding:
The quality of the food provided
The quantity of food provided
Missing menu items
Any responses will be shared with the catering team on a weekly basis.
We hope this approach is able to help support a sustained improvement in the school lunch provision at Ashely Road.
We are delighted to welcome everyone back at the beginning of what I'm sure will be another fun packed year! Whether you are returning to familiar hallways or stepping in to a new environment, we hope each day this year will be an opportunity to explore new ideas, make lasting friendships and show our skills. Let's make this year the best one yet!
