Welcome to Our School! At Ashley Road School we strive to create a learning environment in which all children can enjoy and gain as much as possible from their nursery/primary school years, thereby preparing them well for the future and encouraging an interest in lifelong learning. Every child is important. We aim to ensure that all children are safe, healthy, active, nurtured, achieving, respected, responsible and included and are supported to participate in decisions that affect themselves and their community. We provide an education where the learners meet both challenge and success as they develop their capabilities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. At Ashley Road School we are committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of everyone in the school community through our ECO Green Flag, Health Promoting, Rights Respecting and Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) school approaches. Community, city, national and global links are a valued and intergral part of school life and learning. Staff and pupils foster and develop links with a range of businesses, partner agencies and groups within the community, for example with Active Schools, health professionals and BP, to enrich the learning experiences and opportunities for our pupils. At Ashley Road School we support and encourage all parents to be actively involved in their children’s learning. We recognise the benefits to our pupils of parents, staff and partners working together and we aim to provide a school in which all children and adults feel welcome and work together in partnership. We have an active Parent Council and PTA and many parents also help in classes, organise after school clubs, and support outdoor learning experiences and school trips. The information in this handbook is designed to familiarise parents with our aims, objectives, procedures and organisation. School Information

Ashley Road School, is co-educational and non-denominational and provides up to two years preschool and seven years of primary education. Ashley Road School is part of the Aberdeen Grammar School (AGS) Associated Schools’ Group (ASG). Other primary schools in this ASG include Gilcomstoun School, Mile End School, Skene Square School and St Joseph’s School. Ashley Road School was built in 1889 and is of traditional Victorian design. The current school roll is approximately 400 pupils and is organised across 15 classes. There is a nursery roll of up to 80 pupils organised into a morning or afternoon nursery class. From August 2021, the nursery will run one session, 9am-3pm for a roll of up to 40 children. The management team consists of the Head Teacher, two Depute Head Teachers, who both have some class teaching commitments and 0.6FTE Principal Teacher. Head Teacher – Ms Anne Wilkinson Depute Head Teacher - Mr Michael Middleton and Mr Paul Rae The school staff includes a team of ten part-time pupil support assistants, PE and Drama visiting specialist teachers and music teachers for brass, woodwind, violin, piano, cello and percussion. The office staff consists of the school administrator and one part-time office support worker. The school works closely with a range of other support agencies and volunteers in order to provide the best possible experience for children with additional support needs. Pupil support assistants work in classes with children and also supervise the children at lunch and break times. The Active Schools Coordinator provides a range of additional active and sporting activities for the children after school and across the Grammar Associated Schools Group. There are three main areas to the school building: The main school building houses the primary classes, a computer suite, small breakout rooms for group learning, a gym, and an open plan library area. A newer extension area provides the school with the main parent entrance area, a dining / assembly hall and an office and meeting room. The nursery is located in a separate building across the playground. It operates across a ground floor room, first floor room and outside play area. All children, from nursery to primary 7 make frequent use of the school playground, have access to the school garden and can walk accompanied to the playing field at Cromwell Road for organised sport events.
