Did one of your students, faculty or staff members do something wonderful this past month? Please take a moment to recognize this act by nominating him/her for student of the month or faculty/staff member of the month. We need nominations for students from 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Please submit all forms in blue or black pen only! Just as students deserve to be recognized, teachers and staff do as well. Please take a moment to stop by any Assistant Principal’s Office to pick up a form to nominate a teacher or staff member who has had an impact on you in a positive way. Please drop off all nominations to the 1 West Office.

February is Black History Month. In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African-Americans throughout our history, we will highlight an extraordinary individual each morning. Today we profile Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman helped hundreds of American slaves escape along the secret route to freedom known as the Underground Railroad. Born a slave herself, she fled from Maryland to freedom in Philadelphia. For the next 10 years she made repeated secret trips back to Maryland, leading over 300 escaped slaves north to freedom in Canada. During the Civil War she also served the Union as a scout, spy and nurse. Her success at leading others from slavery earned her the nickname "the Moses of her People" and made her a lasting symbol of the American anti-slavery movement.

Today is the second day of National School Counseling Week. The message today is about reflecting on lessons learned.

Have you ever taken a moment to be still and think about past experiences that lead you to where you are? Maybe attending a field trip to an art museum encouraged you to hone in on your passion for drawing and painting. Perhaps reading about characters in your favorite book inspired you to research ancient civilizations. Maybe not getting enough rest the night before a big test lead you to perform less than your best. Bottom line – many experiences and choices we make can help us learn wise lessons that can help or hinder our future. If you ever want to chat about the lessons you have learned, feel free to stop by and talk to your school counselor.

Make good decisions today!

The yearbook photo for the William Floyd Medical Club will be on February 12 at 1:30pm in the Rotunda. Please be on time. Please see Ms. Randall with any questions.
