Tips for Using Chromebooks

  • Update - Make sure that the Zoom app is updated as well as the OS. Check weekly for updates.

  • Reboot - It is easy to go days, weeks, even months without actually powering off your Chromebook, do this on a weekly basis.

  • Limit Tabs - The more tabs that you have open, the more your CPU is working overtime and slowing everything.

  • Turn off Extensions - limit the extensions that are not pertinent to Zoom.

    • Go to chrome://extensions in your browser. Then disable the extensions that you don't need while using Zoom. You can turn them back on at anytime.

  • Turn Off Video - If you are having issues with your connection, turn off your video if possible. This might help if you are having internet issues. Video takes more bandwidth.

  • No Screen Sharing - If bandwidth might be an issue for you or those in the class, only Screen Share when necessary. Share resources or documents ahead of time when possible. Share a Google Doc ahead of time with the information and links needed.

  • Minimize Zoom Window - If students only need to hear the lesson, minimizing the Zoom screen will help the processor.

  • Use a Phone Instead - If students need their Chromebooks for notes, etc.. have them connect to Zoom via their phone (on wifi) and use their Chromebooks for their work. This does not fit every scenario, but could be helpful with audio lectures.
