Join other classrooms for a Snowman Exchange via Distance Learning! Students practice descriptive writing, geometry, teamwork, following directions, and presentation skills.

Step 1: Registration

When you register (click on the link above), it is VERY important that you include the dates/times that you will be available during December to have your connection. (*Make sure to include specific dates/times, for example: every day 1:00-3:00; or 12/10, 12/12, and 12/18 at 10:30-11:30.)

Step 2: Plan with Partner

You will receive your partner information by December 12th with the date/time of your connection. It is very important that you communicate with your partner teacher as soon as possible to confirm the date/time and details of the exchange.

Decide with your partner how you would like to do the project. Typically, each class will create one group snowman with directions. But if you can do small groups or individual snowmen as well. Creating multiple snowmen will use more class time, or you could have it assigned as homework to do with their family.

Step 3: Create!

It's time to create your snowman! Be Creative! Please use items that are found in the Approved Materials List - Exchange Documents. Create an original snowman or invent your own! **Please avoid using materials that your partner will not be able to easily access or computer programs. If you decided to do one class snowman, then you will work with your class as a group to create the snowman. Or if you decided to create a class set of snowmen, then each student will create their own snowman.

Step 4: Write Directions

Write the step-by-step directions on how you created your snowman. If each student created a snowman, then they will each write their own directions. Or if there is one class snowman, then the class may write the directions as a group. This is where descriptive writing and math come in! Younger students will need more help with measuring and what to include.

Step 5: Email Directions

Once you have your snowman complete with directions, email the directions to your partner teacher. Please carbon copy Audra on this email. Also, use a program that most schools would have available: Word, PDF, or type directions directly into an email. Your partner teacher will also email you their directions.

Step 6: Create 2nd Snowman

After you receive your partner's directions by email, get started creating a snowman based on their directions. You may have decided to create just one or a class set.

Step 7: Connect with Partner Class

Now you have created 2 separate snowmen (or 2 class sets) and you have received a connection date/time. It's time to connect with your partner and share what you have created! Prior to the connection, decide with your partner which class will share first or what format you would like to do during the connection. Print off the Guide to help with the connection details found HERE.

Step 8: Have Fun!

Do your snowmen look the same or different? Were your directions as detailed as you thought? Did they turn out silly? Keep in mind that creating an exact replica is not the point (especially for the younger grade levels). Have fun with how classes may have deciphered your instructions differently than you intended. Be able to laugh at mistakes and have a huge imagination! Make sure to take pictures of your class and their snowmen. Audra would love to share what you have done! Email pictures to Audra to see them posted on the website!
