Class Information

South Central Kansas Distance Learning Network member districts work together to provide classes shared over video conferencing technology. Several times a year, district principals and counselors meet to go over scheduling classes. SCKDLN is a member of KAIDE (Kansas Association for Interactive Distance Education) to provide resources for classes and other needs over video conferencing. Contact the Network Director for more information on meetings.

Common Questions about IDL Classes

What is an IDL class (video conference class or ITV)?

IDL stands for Interactive Distance Learning. This style of class uses video conferencing technology (like Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom, etc..) between different classrooms in different districts. Each classroom has a camera and live audio so that the teacher can interact with their students live in real-time (synchronously). Teachers are trained to use a variety of interactive tools to work with all of their students in their class whether in their own room or at another district. Homework is often dealt with using online tools as well.

How is it different than an Online Class?

Online classes are primarily asynchronous and the teacher is never live to actually speak to their students. Students use an online platform for homework and instruction.

What are the benefits of an IDL Class?

Online classes can be great! But some students struggle in this atmosphere. IDL classes still have a live teacher component that can help those students be successful. If a regular class is not available then an IDL class can be the next best thing for those students. For example, some foreign language courses can be very difficult for some students and often require practice out loud with other students. The IDL class can offer that live interaction that is helpful with practicing words in another language. Because it is real-time, like a regular classroom, the students are able to ask questions from the teacher during class or let them know they are having difficulties.
