Distance Learning Class Etiquette

For Teachers

  • Begin on time

  • Be familiar with the videoconferencing system

  • Avoid wearing loud patterns, red, and white

  • Make eye contact

  • Show interest in all students

  • Do not move out of camera range, students won't be able to see

  • Speak in a strong, clear voice; be aware of where your microphone is

  • Remind students to speak clearly (have them mute only when necessary)

  • Make sure all students have materials before continuing with that part of lesson

  • Don't assume remote site can hear you, do a role call before beginning class

  • Use 24 font and simple fonts on presentations for notes to be easily read

  • Avoid backgrounds on presentations such as small lines or dots Be sure to contrast background color on presentations with font color (example: black background, white font)

  • Be on screen as much as possible so that students get to know you

  • When using document camera or other input, be sure to switch back to you when appropriate

  • ALWAYS assume that someone can hear you in a distance learning classroom. Even when equipment appears to be off!!

For Receiving Sites

  • Make eye contact

  • Do not move out of camera range

  • Speak in a strong, clear voice; be aware of where your microphone is

  • Mute only when teacher specifies

  • Special Program connections will need to stay on mute until it is their turn Do not shuffle papers or create “extra” noise as the microphones are very sensitive Do not talk over another site

  • There is a small lag in audio with most connections, be aware to avoid interruptions

  • Do not constantly move camera around; use presets when necessary

  • When speaking, identify yourself first

  • Notify instructor if technical issues appear; sometimes just one site is affected and instructor may be unaware you are having difficulties

  • Use 24 font and simple fonts on presentations to be easily read

  • Avoid backgrounds on presentations such as small lines or dots

  • Be sure to contract background color on presentations with font color

  • ALWAYS assume that someone can hear you in a distance learning classroom. Even when equipment appears to be off!!
