The last book I read and enjoyed was "Smoking Poppy" by Graham Joyce. The story is about a father who travels to Thailand to find his daughter who is jailed on drug-smuggling charges. I don't know how to classify the book...it's sort of a psychological thriller, sort of a suspense novel. I like the father character...he's not perfect, he's a complicated character with his good points and bad points, very "human". He's made lots of mistakes in his life. As a father, I identified with the character.
The other characters: his traveling companions to Thailand, his son and friend are also interesting...not cardboard characters. I really like books set in foreign locales...I like learning about other cultures, countries, especially exotic locales.
This book was tense, with a lot of action and twists and turns. I like complex action-filled plots. This book was a little different because of the complexity of the relationships and the insights into family life. So it was a cut above the usual "thriller".
I read a lot of different authors: Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Sue Grafton, Elmore Leonard. Bascially, I like a good story that helps me escape from my stressful job.
