Ashley Van Winckel is a second-year Industrial Hygiene MPH candidate from Salem, Oregon. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health - Health Promotion and Health Behavior from Oregon State University in 2023. Ashley completed two separate minors at OSU in Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) and Global Health to supplement her interests in Industrial Hygiene. Her passion stems from early experience in the field through job shadows with multiple CIHs in her hometown. Since starting her degree, Ashley has become increasingly interested in how Industrial Hygiene intersects with Total Worker Health®, understanding how many factors impact one’s ability to stay safe and healthy at work, and not just the single hazard at hand. During the summer of 2022, Ashley had the opportunity to intern at SAIF Corporation, a workers’ compensation firm in Salem, Oregon. As the safety and health intern, she completed nearly a dozen field visits with safety consultants to conduct hazard walkthroughs, exposure testing for noise and various aerosol exposures, and training including Safety in Motion® (ergonomics training). Moving forward, Ashley’s primary goals are to continue mastering her skills in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health Sciences and to continue to learn about the many amazing opportunities that the field of Industrial Hygiene has to offer. She is eager to find an internship for the summer of 2024 that will meet her interests in the IH field. In her spare time, Ashley enjoys getting outdoors as much as possible through hiking or running, and when the weather is nice, paddleboarding. You can also find her in the kitchen finding new recipes to cook while meal-prepping for the week ahead.
