Allison Burk is an alumni of Industrial Hygiene at University of Michigan's School of Public Health. Before joining the wolverines, Allison graduated with a BA in Chemistry at Michigan State University. Her thirst for knowledge in chemical safety inspired her to intern with the Environmental Health and Safety department at Michigan State her final semester. She has learned to work both efficiently and to identify hazards in a laboratory, as well as conduct inspections and organize occupational safety records. She has also been able to attend specialized meetings on safety with hydrofluoric acid, and hopes to utilize the knowledge in the future. Those experiences under the industrial hygienists of the EHS department propelled her into becoming a lab-pack chemist at Tradebe Environmental Services in East Chicago, Indiana. At Tradebe Allison learned DOT, OSHA, and RCRA regulations to handle, pack, and transport hazardous waste as well as prepare the appropriate paperwork for cradle-to-grave operations. She has experienced safety programs in a wide variety of facilities from government research, universities, manufacturing plants, and transportation depots. Born and bred in Jackson, Michigan, Allison is excited to be a part of the University of Michigan. She hopes to utilize all of her experience to cultivate a future in public health. Her one hope is to make a difference and keep people safe in and out of the workplace, making decisions with good judgment and based on scientific merit.
Taichi Murata has an MPH in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Before coming to the University of Michigan, he did internships in a variety of fields including Engineering, Health & Safety, and the Aerospace industry. His internship experiences inspired him to combine aspects of engineering and public health to better the environment. He is interested in becoming more involved with improving workplace environments for employees across both corporate and governmental sectors. In addition, he would like to incorporate energy efficiency at water treatment plants while providing clean water that the population can utilize. After graduating from the program, he plans to either work as an Engineer/Industrial Hygienist at a Government Agency or pursue further education related to Environmental Health & Engineering. This past summer, Taichi worked at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio wiith the Hearing Loss Prevention Team.
He earned the Fundamentals of Engineering/Engineer-In-Training Certification from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) as of December 2011.
Taichi graduated from the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.) in June of 2013.
Roger Lu is a big Notre Dame fan for he spent most of his teenage years in South Bend, IN before attending University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to study Molecular and Cellular Biology / Biochemistry. While at UC Davis, Roger worked as an undergraduate laboratory research assistant in the Department of Nutrition and School of Veterinary Medicine. During the summer of 2009, Roger had the opportunity to intern at Stanford School of Medicine conducting biomarker discovery research using ionized mass spectrometry. Upon graduation, Roger worked at the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University as a health and safety specialist, primarily focusing on safety and compliance concerns and issues to bridge gaps between workplaces and regulatory agencies, especially research laboratories. Roger used his extensive laboratory research experience to identify areas of improvement, incorporating strong interpersonal skills to help initiated and established the framework of the current health, safety, and sustainability program at Stanford School of Engineering. He loves what he did at Stanford EH&S, and had many great mentors along the way. Roger decided further his training to pursue an advanced degree in industrial hygiene to seek more opportunities.
Kaitlyn Jefferson is a Michigan native who has an MPH in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Before attending the University of Michigan, Kaitlyn attended the University of South Dakota as a Division I student-athlete where she earned a B.S in Biology with a specialization in Ecology as well as a B.S. in Anthropology. Her previous research experience involved a project with Dr. Stephen Dewhurst's Microbiology & Immunology Department at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. During this time, she conducted research on identifying a molecule to indirectly inhibit semen-derived enhancer of viral infection (SEVI) -mediated HIV infection. In her free time, Kaitlyn also enjoys swimming, coaching, reading, and travelling.
Hao Xu is a graduate of the industrial hygiene program. Before coming to the University of Michigan, Hao attended the University of Science and Technology Beijing in China where she earned a B.E. in Environmental Engineering. She did internship at Alstom Power Company, Environmental Control System, Research and Development Department where she assisted in the sustainability design of the project and researched antifoam and foam theory. She has studied a small project in Chinese Academy of Sciences where she cultured Anaerobic microbe to extract DNA for the sequencing the functional gene in reduction of hexavalent Chromium to its less toxic form. She hopes to pursue a career with heavy industry where worker's health is of serious concern, including petrochemical, steel making, chemical production, manufacturing industries. Hao is also interested in ice-skating, volleyball, photography, dance and running.
Maria Braem has an MPH in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan. Before arriving at UM, Maria lived in Washington, DC and worked for the United States Chemical Safety Board as the Chemical Incident Screener and an Investigator. While at the CSB, her experiences varied from collecting and managing chemical incident data, data projects, and participating in root-cause investigations. This past summer, Maria interned at AbbVie, a biopharmaceutical company in North Chicago, IL Her experiences included occupational health exposure assessments, noise assessments, and safety and environmental projects.
Maria graduated from Penn State with a major in Environmental Resource Management and a minor in Industrial Health and Safety. While in college, Maria did internships at Chevron North America, Veolia Environmental Services, and General Electric.
Maria has a passion for people and a love for the environment and intends to seek workplace change through providing factual and scientific based information to policymakers, educate on hazard recognition and elimination in the workplace, and advocate for safety change on behalf of workers that currently work in hazardous conditions and workers that no longer have a voice.
Yetunde Odutayo is a graduate of the Industrial Hygiene MPH program in the Environmental Health Science department at the University of Michigan. She was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Growing up as the only female child she always had an eye to identify hazards and prevent injuries at home as she was saddled with the responsibility of looking after her 'very playful brothers'. While in the university, she interned at her nations major oil exploration and regulatory corporation, where she gained invaluable insight into the occupational hazards and accidents workers were exposed to. She spent months researching 'work related injuries' and noted rising incidence of work place accidents in her rapidly industrializing home country and the world. This alongside her natural inclination to injury prevention prompted her to pursue an advanced degree in industrial hygiene. Yetunde has a degree in pharmacy from the University of Lagos. Upon graduation, she intends to pursue a career either with government regulatory agencies or with large Industrial firms to help create policies that will prevent work related injuries and illnesses. In her free time, Yetunde enjoys reading and travelling.
