Christian is a first-year Masters of Public Health Candidate in Industrial Hygiene. He is from Farmington Hills, MI and is a first-generation American and student. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2017 at Oakland University studying Sociology and Anthropology with a Three Science Minor. Christian was interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and worked as an EMT in Metro Detroit, but soon realized that working in public health would be more effective in preventing injury and illness in the patients he saw. Industrial hygiene interests him specifically, because he has seen, up-close, the adverse health effects that can arise from one’s occupation in his family members who work in construction and remodeling. He will be interning at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio this summer as an Environmental, Health and Safety Intern. Outside of class, Christian enjoys playing and watching soccer, hiking, studying sociology/psychology, and watching movies. He also loves listening to and discovering new indie music.
Emilio is a California native from the East Bay Area city of Hayward. He received his Environmental Science (B.S.) degree in 2014 from UCLA, then spent the next five years at his alma mater researching genetic predispositions to diabetes and muscle issues induced by statin drugs. His research history also includes characterizing electronic cigarette emissions in multi-unit businesses. Emilio began the pursuit of a public health career after realizing the importance of workplace wellness in surviving the American economy and healthcare system. He will spend summer 2020 in Anacortes, WA with Marathon Petroleum as a Health, Environmental, Safety & Security intern. For fun, Emilio plays old video games, attempts creative writing and exercises in order to perform professional wrestling moves.
Emily is from Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Biological Sciences from the University of Cincinnati in 2019. She discovered the field of industrial hygiene through an Environmental Risk Assessment course during her junior year of undergrad. Eager to learn more about this career path, she met with a few IHers at the EPA and faculty members in UC’s IH graduate program. Emily worked in an epidemiology lab during her final year that monitors the health effects of former workers and residents living near a decommissioned DOE uranium processing plant in Fernald, Ohio. After multiple major changes and job experiences, she is confident industrial hygiene is the perfect field that aligns with her interests in protecting human and environmental health and her desire to serve a meaningful purpose. This summer, she looks forward to being a Health, Environment and Safety intern for Chevron at their Houston location. Aside from schooling and soul searching, Emily likes to spend time hiking, running, cooking, practicing guitar, and relaxing with friends & family.
