Mary-Catherine is a second year M.P.H. student in Industrial Hygiene. Mary-Catherine grew up in Oakland Township, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish in 2014. During her undergraduate experience, Mary-Catherine participated in a few community service projects, The Clean Water Project in Urubamba, Peru, and a trip to Managua, Nicaragua with International Samaritan, both which fostered her interest in Environmental Health Sciences and Industrial Hygiene. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Mary-Catherine participated in a year-long volunteer service program with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest and AmeriCorps in Hillsboro, Oregon. She served as a Program Coordinator at a housing agency called Bienestar, where she supervised a number of residences services programs. For her M.P.H. internship from May to August 2016, Mary-Catherine worked with an organization in Guadalajara, Mexico called Centro de Reflexión y Acción Laboral and investigated occupational health risks faced by workers in the electronics industry. As an Industrial Hygiene student, Mary-Catherine desires to combine her undergraduate background in Spanish with Industrial Hygiene, focusing on the health and safety of working communities both in the United States and abroad.
Lauren Kokx is a second year M.P.H. student in Industrial Hygiene. Before coming to U-M, Lauren graduated with a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health Management from Grand Valley State University. She interned at Marathon Petroleum Corporation's Detroit refinery this past summer where she completed a variety of projects surrounding welding, noise, air sampling and communication tools. Lauren spent the summer of 2015 at Perrigo Company as an industrial hygiene intern, in which she conducted air and noise sampling, developed a laser safety program, worked with the hazard communication and other IH programs and learned the roles of a corporate industrial hygienist. While at Grand Valley, Lauren also completed internships at GE – Aviation and Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber where she learned a variety of skills from Lockout/Tagout and auto-restock inventory tools to asbestos inspections and indoor air quality sampling and reporting. Lauren hopes to pursue a career in a manufacturing environment, specifically chemical or pharmaceutical, with hopes of transitioning to an educational role in the future.
Lauren is also interested in the Detroit tigers, UM softball, her cat Jack and the gorgeous beaches of West Michigan where she originates.
Michael Manning is a second year M.P.H. student in Industrial Hygiene and current UMIHSA President. He was born and raised in Macomb, Michigan. In 2015, Michael completed his studies in Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Michigan.
During his undergraduate studies, Michael did research in the chemistry department. He did molecular dynamics simulations to study protein-solvent interactions. Michael also worked as a research assistant for the Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) where he researched relevant policies that affect the roles of community health workers (CHWs) in the state of Michigan and around the country. During his last semester at the University of Michigan, Michael spent a semester in Detroit where he had the chance to study and intern in the city. Michael interned at Ecoworks, a nonprofit that works to create sustainable housing and energy opportunities for Detroit residents. While with Ecoworks, Michael identified and outlined sustainable financial structures for a Healthy Homes program, including Medicaid reimbursement, grant funding, and insurance payment. Using this information, Michael designed a Healthy Homes program that could function in the City of Detroit.
During his four years of undergraduate studies, Michael was an active member in Circle K at the University of Michigan, a community service organization on campus. During his time, Michael held several leadership positions, including Treasurer and Governor of the Michigan District of Circle K.
Rachel Neuenfeldt is a dual degree M.S. and M.P.H student in Environmental Policy and Industrial Hygiene respectively. Rachel is from Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a degree in Environmental Science and Policy. During her time as an undergraduate, Rachel worked at the National Wildlife Federation where she learned about the political landscape facing regulatory and non-profit organizations. She hopes to use the experience and knowledge gained by studying Industrial Hygiene to work on labor policy issues in the United States. Rachel is involved in two research projects that both address the interface of science and policy and how to create science that will be used by policymakers and managers. She also works at Michigan Interfaith Power & Light, an organization dedicated activating faith groups to address issues like climate change and renewable energy.
Outside of academics, Rachel enjoys cheering on the Red Wings and spending time with her golden-doodle, Delilah.
Ritu is a second year Industrial Hygiene student pursuing an MPH degree. She started working at Occupational Safety and Environmental Health in the fall of 2015, where she also interned during the following summer. There, she worked with Operational Health and Safety group and completed exposure assessments for noise, welding, lead and particulate matter. Her responsibility as a part of Lab Safety group involved laboratory visits and ventilation certification in research labs across UoM campus. During the summer, she was also involved in a research project aimed at addressing health and safety needs of migrant nail salon workers via online education and training. She switched her career from Bioinformatics to Industrial Hygiene because she believes in improving workers’ safety and health not only in the organization she works in, but also across her home country of India.
Outside of academics, Ritu enjoys travelling and exploring different parts of the world. Her wish is to visit all the wonders of the world before she turns 35!
