Mark Spencer is the former UMIHSA president and a graduate of the MPH in Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances program. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science. He has four years of experience working for a tax and accounting software company in product support and technical training. This summer he worked as an Environmental, Health and Safety intern with Abbott Laboratories in the Global Pharmecuetical Research and Development Division. His responsibilities included industrial hygiene sampling, radiation safety, biological safety and machine guarding. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling to Guatemala, gardening, being outdoor and playing sports.
Michelle is the former UMIHSA Vice President and a graduate of the Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances MPH program. During the summer of 2012, she was an HSSE intern with BP America at Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine, WA. Her main project included an exposure assessment to welding fumes in confined spaces and the evaluation of ventilation techniques used to reduce these exposures. Other projects included an additive tank gauging exposure assessment, radiological surveys and source leak testing, noise mapping and dosimetry, personal exposure monitoring, as well as ventilation assessments in the refinery's QA/QC lab. She received her B.S. from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI in Biomedical Science and Chemistry in 2008. Prior to attending the University of Michigan School of Public Health, she worked at the University of Michigan Medical School in the Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine developing PET radiopharmaceuticals to be used in pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic molecular imaging studies. Her professional interests include radiation monitoring, environmental and personnel dose assessments, radiological emergency and radioactive spill response. In her free time, she enjoys volunteering at the local humane society, playing in a summer recreational softball league, and traveling.
Cassie Roberts is a second year student in the Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances MPH program and the former UMIHSA philanthropy chair. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Pacific University in Oregon in 2011 with a major in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Chemistry and a minor in Political Science. During the summer of 2012, Cassie worked as a Masters Student Co-Op with CDM in her hometown, Libby, MT, where she conducted general property investigations as part of the town's ongoing asbestos cleanup. Outside of school, Cassie enjoys exploring the beautiful Montana wilderness, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. Cassie graduated in 2013 with a MPH in Industrial Hygiene.
Ahleah Rohr Daniel is the former UMIHSA treasurer and EHSA 2nd Year Representative. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Science with a concentration in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. While there, she conducted research in the laboratory of Dr. Anna D. Gudmundsdottir. Ms. Rohr Daniel completed her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Professors John P. Wolfe and Mark M. Banaszak Holl. Her thesis research focused on the use of benign organometallic complexes in chemical synthesis and the effective implementation of safety and chemical hygiene protocols in the undergraduate curriculum. During the summer of 2012, she had the unique opportunity to intern at both the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh, Scotland and at ChemRisk in San Francisco, CA. She graduated in 2013 with a Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene with a concentration in Hazardous Substances at the University of Michigan School of Public.

Kendra Broadwater is the former UMIHSA social chair and a graduate of the MPH in Industrial Hygiene/Hazardous Substances Training program at The University of Michigan. During the summer of 2012, she was an EHS intern at Alcoa, Inc in Cleveland, Ohio. Her primary responsibilities in this position included exposure monitoring and safety program development and implementation at the large manufacturing plant. In June 2011, she graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Health and minor in Chemistry with College Honors from the University of Washington. Prior to moving to Ann Arbor, she worked in exposure research and led the Student Environmental Health Association in community outreach and professional development projects. For her senior honors thesis research she evaluated the efficacy of glove and coverall materials as protective barriers against isocyanate permeation in the automotive repair industry. At the University of Michigan, she is working on research concerning the naturally-occurring dioxin contamination of ball clay, a commonly-used ceramics material. She is interested in the social determinants of occupational exposure and plans to work as an industrial hygienist upon graduating. Outside of classes, she volunteers at 826Michigan, does CrossFit, and enjoys stand-up comedy and radio.
Kan Sun is a second year MPH student in Industrial Hygiene and the former UMIHSA secretary. She received her Bachelor Degree in biology at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. She came to the U.S. and completed her MS degree in biology with a concentration on neurobiology at the University of Michigan. Kan Sun has had previous research experience in neurodegenerative disease and oxidative stress. During the past summer, she worked as a scientist intern in the Health Sciences Group at Exponent, where she enjoyed working on risk assessment and post-exposure reconstruction on exposure to toxic chemical, asbestos and biological hazards. She also found out how amazing her driving skills got improved this summer from site inspections and daily transportations. Outside of school, she plays the Clarinet and loves baroque music and opera. She is expected to graduate in May 2013. After graduation, she would like to devote in practicing industrial hygiene.
Adam Calisti is the former UMIHSA historian and is graduated with a Master of Public Health degree in Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances. He grew up in the small city of New Baltimore, MI east of Detroit. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science at the University of Michigan. He has previous research background in neurology. During the summer of 2011, he spent time working testing air quality for asbestos during abatement in elementary schools with Nova Environmental, Inc. Last summer he interned with Northrop Grumman in Baltimore, MD. Here he conducted baseline chemical sampling for various processes, sound level mapping, and noise dosimetry. Also, he conducted Rf surveys and assisted with the implementation of the GHS that is being mandated in the upcoming years. In his free time he enjoys reading, biking, tennis, and spending time with family.
Kevin Sun is a graduate of the Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances MPH program. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2011 with two B.S. degrees in Environmental Science and Psychology. During the 2012 summer, Kevin worked as an Industrial Hygiene intern for BP US Pipelines and Logistics in Naperville, IL where he updated safety policies, performed data analysis, and participated in several worst-case scenario drills. Kevin has worked research involving the toxicological effects of trichloroethylene on preterm birth during his graduate career at the UM School of Public Health. He is also researched how patient-therapist relationships impact rehabilitation success at the UM Hospital.
